Hypothetically speaking if a guy had a linear of this brand and size hooked to a cobra 29 and a 4'mirror mount firestik, what would be a typical operating range? And on the same setup, when turned on the power light goes out but preamp light stays on, what would be the issue there?

I'm not an expert with amplifiers by any means, but surely somebody who is will answer soon. However, if you are running an amp with a 4 foot antenna, you are relying on the amp way too much. You should get a much larger antenna before an amplifier becomes your concern. I would say at the very least a 5 foot fiberglass whip or a Wilson 2000. Running a lot of power with a short CB antenna may not fix your transmit range much and will allow you to hear very little.

I depends on who hears you. I mean that you could be heard across the country but those within 10 miles may not hear you at all.

I wouldn't get an amp just yet, I would work on the antenna system from the radio to the antenna, and get that straight first, then add power IF needed later.

I'd say it's a pretty good rule of thumb that if you can't reach out 15 miles with a Cobra 29 all by itself you're not ready for an amplifier yet and that you still have some antenna issues to get resolved

I was curious about the Pal tx-100, so I pulled the manual for it out of my box of amp stuff and discovered my notes, it is a rip off of another amp that was designed by some kid in my area and has always had issues with distortion when they used cheap parts in production of it.

Does it use a single sd1446 transistor?
I don't think I've even seen one that small

    No two of them.

the palomar and "browning" and a few more branded amps (I think there were 7 on the market at one time), all have the same issues. They used the pretty much the same components and in a few cases the same board made by someone in Ohio.

I think I parted out 10 of these in the past.
