If they paid using the logbook hours, great. If they only paid a 8 hour day regardless of what the truck did, not so great.

 

The odd thing is that people actually applied to get a job there, and probably had to jump through many hoops, just to get a job, that ultimately paid less than they would have made at Subway just making sandwiches.

 

Much like the kiosks at fast food joints where the employees started demanding more than the ROI they provided to their employers, the more ANY employee demands to be paid (without market support or justification) the greater the incentive for the employer to look to other means of accomplishing the necessary tasks. Granted, it's relatively simple to replace someone taking orders at McD's with a kiosk whereas it's a little more cumbersome of a task to replace a driver...but given enough economic incentive to push toward that goal, it'll happen some day.

If you want to get paid more, the way to do that is to make yourself worth more. Demonstrate that you can generate profits for your employer and minimize his losses...be an asset to the operation rather than a liability. If your employer cannot afford to lose you as an employee, you'll be paid more than if your employer could replace you within the hour.

 

I was making that 14 years ago in one of the lowest cost-of-living areas in the country. That company also paid 100% of the employee's health insurance (BCBS) and paid time and a half past 40 hours.

Hell, even my wife makes more than that working at Walmart!

 

There's already a few driverless trucks on the road. More will be coming and companies won't have to deal with the minority of whining truck drivers. I wonder if those drivers whine and cry when they're home with their families? Do their wives think they married a tough, real man?

40 hrs/week x 52 weeks/year (paid vacations, I'm assuming) and that's $24/hr. If they're working 60 hrs/week, now they're only averaging $16.25/hr (straight time) or $14/hr (paid overtime) to hit that $50K/yr mark.

I'm guessing they aren't working 40 hour weeks.

 

70 hrs/week straight time with 40 hrs paid vacation is less than $14/hour...$13.96 to be exact. For a "senior driver", that's pathetic in ANY region of the country. If they're paid overtime, that works out to $11.55/hr base pay...so if rookie drivers are starting off at $12/hr, they are on straight time. I'd have to laugh and walk out of the interview if that was all that was being offerred.
