    It's all good...

However, keep in mind when you place the phone app in "Inspection Mode", that's all any inspector can see. In addition, I would never hand my phone to an inspector Carte Blanche and let him walk away with it out of my sight.

Basically, yes. You can run KT or BR without being connected ELD style or not. Since your truck is exempt from the upcoming ELD mandate in December you're exempt from the ELD regs.

Not sure what you mean by, "both sides". I would pick one or the other if I were you. Trying to do both may bring many problems your way. Personally, option A is the best choice from where I'm sitting but use the app instead of an actual paper log book. It's easier, cleaner and lessons the chances for mistakes. Keep a printer around in case you run into that royal POS DOT bear that insists on having your logs in paper form for him to inspect.

By both sides, I mean being able to have "flexibility" of paper, if the need arises, and avoid the "mess & stress" created by elogs --- as most Cowboys claim.

This past summer, I did a seasonal gig that run paper logs. I also run KT elog for my own learning purposes. I got a taste of both, and to be honest, I liked elog.

Doing paper logs was such a chore.

The only thing missing from KT was State line mileage records. I had to put a note on my TND710 on the odo every time I crossed state lines. I wish they can capture that. KT already creates GPS bread crumbs in the background as you drive, so adding mileage to the odometer counter is not that hard.

I use KT just as a digital logbook basically. I makes things a lot easier. I still don't have to mess with ELD though since I have 94.
