While it won't be tomorrow the process is well under way. Even a few guys ay my carrier are part of the study. They offered me a slot but after some thought i declined. I don't work regularly enough and was afraid that would negatively impact things.

But I think that was only in regard to sleeper berth splitting. Not even sure why a study is needed on that. We did it for decades before the nonsense of the current HOS came to be.

The one aspect that is going to really throw a monkey wrench in ELD and current HOS, is the yard move option on the ELD. Any move with the vehicle will automatically kick onto driving line unless Yard Move option is selected, in which one is placed On Duty. Either way, those little moves are going to mess things up. Especially if one was trying to get in a 30 minute break or 2 hr off duty (per the current split rules).

The study is needed because split sleepier is exactly what the current hos was designed to prevent with the 14 hour clock. The theory at the time was guys getting 2 naps was building sleep debt. In my opinion at the time they were right. 2 4 hour naps on paper was really 2 2 hour naps in reality. Doing that long term led to driving down the road with all the alertness of a zombie. If elogs put a stop to the fudging then 2 shorter sleep breaks becomes a realistic option.

The yard move thing... While its gonna suck, the truth is thats a loop hole that has been exploited by us. Just look at all the posts on ttr by guys stating they go off duty at the exit ramp then drive on to the truck stop. Or that park around the corner two hours before the shipper opens them drive in and get loaded all while logging sleeper berth.

The HOS problem is in the fact that have studied it too much already. Complicating it...Have they ever studied the shape of outhouses to make them safe too?
Here's my scientific theorem "The less FMSCA is studying anything, the better safety on the roads will be yielded"
There is only one HOS rule needed "Don't drive while sleepy" The safety problem is solved.

I doubt the gov will give us any brake on hos , if anything the 11 hour rule will go to ten or 9 and everything else will stay the same .
That's what they wanted to do last time they visited hos rules and when the accident rate continues to go up with ELDs , it will be their chance/excuse to make it happen .
If the 14 hour rule is to restrictive , one way to fix it is drop the 11 hour rule .
With 10 or 9 hours allowed instead of 11 , the 14 hour rule is less significant , it's easier to get your 10 or 9 hours driving in , , in a 14 hour on duty limit .
    Getting worse is an option

The real problem is all the dumb chits out here thinking they need to make a decent living trucking.

It's a minimum wage job for the single homeless person now.

Stop trying to raise a family and have a nice house and car.

    Wake up......

It's only that way for the "miles miles miles" crowd. When you stop getting paid for the miles you drive and start getting paid for the job that you do, the need to run 3500+ miles per week in order to make ends meet disappears.

I know it does for me. I average about 2500 miles a week, home every weekend and holiday, take a few weeks a year off, own 40 acres with a decent ranch home, wife does just a little part time handicapped caregiver work (zero benefits), Cadillac CTS and a Chevy 2500 in the heated garage. Not on any dedicated stuff either. Just keep all the loads I run within 500-600 miles of the house in any direction. Elogs now for 7 years.

You can do that on electronic logs. It's called personal conveyance. AKA 'off-duty driving'.
