We were allowed to where I went, they didn't like it especially but that's what worked for me.

thats the way i taught my students to 45* back
i taught a VERY specific prcedure.
like was posted above, you wont be able to setup the same EVERY time, BUT......
if you learn the actions and reactions using EXACTLY THE SAME procedure. when you DO have to set up differently you will know what corrections to make
kind of like where scientists do testing. they use a controlled environment to reduce/eliminate variables.
that way in "the real world" they can anticipate reaction accurately

Get out and look. Sometimes more than once. Back up an inch, pull up three back up two and get out and look. Sure, traffic might back up out to the street but if it really bothers someone they might get out and help. If not .... "I'll be done in a while."

But, the school enviornment isn't "real life" you are there to be prepared to pass your final exam. That's passing the state's CDL exam. You have only so much time, some many get out's per skill, so many touches of the lines, etc.
I know what all of you mean about "real life" every scenerio is going to be different. When I told the trainer I equated every line with another truck, a car, a wall, etc I was told not to. Think of them as yellow lines and orange cones so you pass the test. I did anyway and for me it helped.
The person who started this post had problems with parallel parking, mine was reverse lane change. But I got it and so will he. Kinda like the light comes on. I found my notes on that so if he wants to know how I did it, he can let me know.
But, in my opinion, and I don't have a lot of driving miles, the basics to the skills will help you with the set ups and then you're kinda on your own. Takes time and practice.
