I got pssed today... Got a freaking chip on the brand new windshield... :biggrin_25510: Some debris that came from truck passing me on left lane...
And just a couple days ago we all got msg from safety boss saying that lately they had several cases of chips on windshield... and that was caused by folks following too close... Well, at least that's how I interpreted the msg...
Well... we all know that debris on the highway fly in all kinds of directions and not necessarily from vehicle right in front...
Since I came to this co., this is the third chip I get on the windshield. First was last Christmas... something "came" from truck on the right lane and hit my passenger side... Second happened about one month ago and it "came" from truck on the left lane and hit my driver side...
The one today "came" from a tanker, passing me on the left lane and hit my passenger side... :biggrin_2552::biggrin_25510:
In none of those incidents I was following anyone... This is the time when I wish I had a dash camera in the truck just to show to my co....

The size of the chip is still below a DOT violation...

But it has many spikes... and it may grow fast... specially with the extreme temps inside and outside the truck...

I covered it with clear nail polish... hopefully that will keep it from growing too fast...
Will send pictures to co. on Monday... maybe they will ask me to stop by terminal in OK on my way to IN to have it fixed... This is, if they will open the shop on Friday... Shall see...

    Rocks,

With UT and CO in that routing you are going I70 over the Rockies? Colorado is required carry for chains on that road this time of year.

Unless you have chains AND the burning desire to use them I would stay south.

Would cost more to buy the chains than the fuel to go around. Also unless very light load I70 takes longer time wise with dry conditions.

Home finally after a few nights in the hospital following a pretty serious complication from having a kidney stone blasted (Shock Wave Lithotripsy). I was supposed to only be off work one day, but had SEVERE pain the same night following the "surgery". Went back to the ER and ended up getting transferred to the parent hospital down in the Lehigh Valley, was admitted, and had an "exploratory" intervention to find and fix where my kidney was bleeding. What was a simple out-patient procedure turned into a mess including needing a transfusion. Now instead of one day off, I have 2 weeks off, and a new job likely put on hold as I don't want to start it until I'm completely healed.

Yes and no on following too close. It would increase the odds a tiny bit, but not enough to matter. You're more likely to get hit by a stone that's been wedged into the tread for a while and finally comes loose, versus one being pitched up off the road or falling off another truck. And those are the ones thta go all over the place. Best places for that are the first few miles -past- a construction zone or an icy patch that highway crews threw gravel on to improve traction. That's where the traffic speed increases back up to the limit and the stones come out.

My business relationship with my windshield service seems cyclical and somewhat random. I've gone over a year without needing one, then I'll have a run of them. The good news is glass isn't that expensive in the grand scheme of things to spend money on fixing a truck.

Get well and good luck Voyager1968.
