You know... sometimes we don't seem to "care" much about our old folks... specially if we can be with them regularly... we don't "value" them much and don't miss them much... until they are gone...
You are right, he is YOUR ONE AND ONLY DAD... even if you guys' relationship was not that great... We are all imperfect... But people change and time changes everything...
Good thing you are there with your dad, helping him and comforting him... I bet he enjoys that too... Cherish the moments you guys have with each other now...
Hope your dad gets better soon...

I agree with you Rocks. My Dad was my best friend I sought his advise and approval in everything. One of the last things he said to me was you will always be my baby boy, but I need you to take care of your Mama for me. I did as he asked for 15 years till she went to be with him. I guess I'm blessed to have been so close to my parents and never live more than 10 miles from them except while I was in the Army. Now that they are gone I miss them more than words can say, but I also know they are always with me.

 

My dad doesn't remember who I am.

 

Close. Dementia. His drinking aggravated it.
