Thanks for the tip! Although I think they have a tough time moving the yellow cake in this part of the country. The beef business isn't big enough here to create demand for the stuff. We don't have those big feedlots here like you do out there. Most of the beef business we have here is from dairy cows, and some of the dairy farmers use it to feed, but it is not nearly enough from what I've heard. Actually I don't remember seeing a single truck loading that stuff any of the times I was driving around the plant. Not sure what they do with all of it, but they must get rid of it somehow. Sounds like the system works a little better out west.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong (I'm sure you will) but I was told years ago that if you're driving a truck and work another job outside of trucking that all the hours you work during the non-driving job have to be logged as on-duty and count against your 70.

I believe you are correct. Although I think the rules are different for farms.

Some intermodal companies hire part time drivers. Google : intermodal/drayage companies

I was told the same thing...non driving job would have to be under the table

Things I'm learning to live without driving farm trucks: speedo, tach, fuel gauge, dash lights, heater. It's all good!

Yup. I own the business with my brother, and I only drive once a week at the most, yet I have to record all hours "working" outside of driving. It doesn't have to be in a log book, but recorded at work somehow.

Take a picture of your first truck.
