Thanks, everybody, for the information on the laws/policies about this sort of thing. He will definitely be getting the written thing from his company that says I am allowed and paying a little bit of insurance to have me with him.
ShootThis- I'm thinking about it. I haven't really decided yet because I am not sure if I would be able to handle it. I wouldn't have a problem riding, but dealing with all the pressure and traffic and regulations is not something I think I would be good at. Right now, I work as a nursing assistant for a hospice care organization. So I have less than zero idea what it actually takes to be a trucker.

My new insurance company said "NO" to any riders/passengers.
I told them I would stick with my old company as this was a deal breaker.
I actually had to list my wife on the policy and then underwriting approved it.
No additional cost of premium - just another stupid rule!

Because as I read the law, you don't have to.
"No written authorization, however, shall be necessary for the transportation of: (1) Employees or other persons assigned to a commercial motor vehicle by a motor carrier;(2) Any person transported when aid is being rendered in case of an accident or other emergency;(3) An attendant delegated to care for livestock."
Your wife would fall under "other persons assigned to a commercial motor vehicle by a motor carrier", the motor carrier being you. Simply state your wife is assigned as an assistant, bookkeeper, HBIC, or whatever.

If you're a content writer I assume you can type fairly fast? I used to do medical transcriptions online and made some decent money, usually no less than $15/hr. I did mostly things for psychiatrists.
I would have no idea how to get into though. I knew someone that did it and started doing their excess work when they got behind until eventually just doing consistently. -
Unfortunately, for most medical transcription jobs they expect an associates degree nowadays.

That is what my company did when I started. I just had to list a couple names and sign on the line. As long as the boss knows I'm taking a passenger with me its all good.

My insurance agent told us about this rule when we first signed up with her. I spent 5 or so minutes and thought up everyone that could ever possibly ride with me and listed them on the paper. I signed it as lead driver(they dont need to know that I am the only driver) and keep one copy in the truck the other in the business files. When we did our fsafety audit the very nice DOT lady asked if I took riders, when I said yes she asked if I had written authorization from the company for each of them. I whipped out my paper and she said that it was exactly what was needed.

I agree. Get your CDL. You can then drive a couple hrs at times. Say on interstate when weather is good. Let him do the rain/hills/snow until you are comfortable with it.
Even if you only drive 6 hrs a day thats 300 miles.... -
Most rider policies require that the rider does not have a CDL or a permit, so if you want to get your CDL then during that time you will need to be off the truck. Once you have your CDL then you can get hired onto the company with your B/F and start helping to make money.
