Well of course I'm selfish. We all are. And I confess as someone who has to fight clogged up traffic through the Niagara-Toronto corridor on a regular basis, I'm definately biased towards orderly, efficient traffic flow. One of the biggest contributers to traffic jams is the fact that people spread themselves out all over the road with no regard for efficient "packing" of the highways. It's like the difference between you packing your trunk carefully, maximizing use of space vs throwing it in "willy nilly." Your trunk capacity is way higher if you pack efficiently. It's the same with our highways - "pack" the traffic efficiently (ie. stay right except to pass) and you always ensure the maximum amount of roadway is open for other vehicles.

Heavy traffic all starts with people in light traffic who don't observe the law. While not observing the speed limit is also against the law, the effect in light traffic is much less on my fellow travellers. Therefore I'm much more concerned with efficient packing of traffic on the roads than ensuring I don't go over the 100kph speed limit.

That actually sounds like a great idea. I have no problem with that. My problem is not so much with the standard as much as that few people observe the standard that exists.

My observation is similar, but I would add that there are far too many individualists on the road who hang out in middle lanes, not because it's safer, but because they're more comfortable there - and who cares about how it's affecting others around them.

Speeding is not the issue. 90% of the population speeds. The issue is if you are not passing anyone, move right and let traffic flow the way it is suppose to.
When in reality you have multiple lanes and trucks are restricted to the two right lanes, we still only have two lanes like on a 4 lane highway. So why does the mentality change? You wouldn't drive down a 4 lane in the left lane.
You stay in the middle lane and get surrounded by traffic, you have no outs in an emergency. At least in the right lane you have the shoulder. I'll stick to what I'm taught and not make my own rules up. There's other drivers to worry about.

In Zanesville,Ohio there is a sign that says "Thru traffic use left lane", they can and will ticket you for not doing so or atleast they used to. I've also heard if you are involved in an accident and you should've been in the left lane, you will be cited.

I think we all been through there. That's one specific area with heavy on ramp traffic.

Instead of switching 2 lanes to pass lots of people just drive in that center line (the trucks passing lane) so thanks for not doing that.

I usually stay in the 3rd lane on the 400 series except to get by slow traffic. Most of the on ramps are long enough that if you leave a decent following distance those merging don't affect you. With all trucks limited to 105 there's not many cars going slower than us anyway so I'm not sure why so many stay in the middle lane.

I generally drive in the lane that will require the least number of lane changes at or a little below the speed limit. If I am exiting soon or its non rush hour traffic that's usually the right lane.

Congested 3+ lane roads I will be more toward the middle. I also find it easier to keep a proper following distance in the non merging lane.

If that pisses you off so be it. You probably pissed me off tailgating me before ripping it to the right and barely making it back in front of me before crushing some 4 wheeler. Being a professional driver I will back it down and let you back in continuing the cycle. You just made 2 unnecessary lane changes to same 5 minutes at the end of the day. Anyone trying to "make time" in congested traffic is an idiot.

two problems..firstly, in toronto, lots of left exit onlys make the left lane as bad of a choice as the right lane. thats why i'd rather be in the middle. it CANT exit only..haha...

Second, what about when you want to get off? we're talking 12 lane highways here..

my dad pulled that one in my car. i remember one time in particular, doing 35 to 40 on interstate 196...but it was by the south end, where theres hardly any traffic....

anything less than 55 you get LESS milage...god...

i cant stand people who drive less than the speed limit in good conditions. unless its for a good reason, like im not going to get up to 70 to get off in 1/2 a mile and all..
