Passport card is still accepted. I crossed out of Quebec yesterday into Champlain NY. I just hand them my passport card and fast card (even though it is not a fast approved load) and my manifest and I clear the booth in less than 2 mins. I usually take 2 loads a week into Canada and only had a problem once in the last 11 years of expedite driving and driving a TT across.

It is a trusted traveler document. You apply for it online and have to go to a customs office to finish the application and get finger printed and photoed. There are "some" loads that can only cross via a fast approved driver and carrier and they have dedicated lanes at the border for you to use. Fast loads go thru the border allot easier because they are basically pre-approved shipment's handled by trusted "low risk" carriers and drivers. Getting a Fast card is good even if you do not take fast loads across the border, it shows the custom agent that you have been checked out and that you are low risk. If you are going to cross the border more that once a month I would spend the money for it. In the long run the little bit it cost, will save you time and hassle at the border.
