Just some more motivation for you guys who are not tracking your #'s or not tracking them very closely. My company payroll department failed to put mileage pay on one trip. It was only $160 and i didn't notice it until my spread sheet #'s and my actual #'s weren't equalizing. After using my detailed spread sheet trip reports and auditing the pay check trip by trip i quickly found the problem and called it into payroll who fixed it immediately. The sum will be on my next check per my request.

so far I've earned $220 of my own money just by keeping these guys honest tracking my #'s.

Rambling works for Systems Transport. It MAY seem bad that they missed these, but from some of the horror stories I've heard from other companies, the fact that they quickly fixed the accounting mistake without a fuss or retaliation is QUITE impressive. Transport is definitely moving to my Short-List.

I can't wait to get a copy of this spreadsheet from Rambling (been reading tons but just signed up and don't have enough posts for PM's yet).

Thanks to all for the great info and community!

True. Glad to see a newbie interested in not only the driving side, but the business side of the industry as well. I've considered creating a seperate thread just to discuss basic Accounting with fellow drivers and help them get a real grasp on their #'s, but after a bit of investigating it seems like this has already been done to different extents by others and the problem is not a lack of opportunity to learn, but instead a lack of interest in learning on drivers parts.

Would anyone disagree with this and why? I'd hate to waste my time on something noone is going to use.

Like your spreadsheet. Think its better then the one I worked up. Now if I could just remember to fill the dang thing in, I would be much better off.:biggrin_25523: Since I haven't been filling it in on a regular basis I don't have exact numbers, but, can sure say your doing a heck of a lot better then I am. Averaging around 2300 miles weekly, about $650 weekly. Spend 6-8 weeks out and 3-4 days home.

If its not too much trouble could you PM me a template (blank) copy of both of those spreadsheets. Please and thanks.

Perhaps it is an issue with the amount of time and energy truckers spend just to keep the wheels rolling? I AM a newbie, so I really don't know, but I know there is a lot more to this industry than getting behind a wheel, peddling your feet and shifting a gear.

It's easy for me to read blogs and search, but I've only scratched the surface of what this complicated industry entails. TTR is an amazing resource, and the answers are there if you search, but it seems that there is definitely no easy-to-navigate guide on the subject. And this is likely due to the fact that there are many perspectives.

All in all, such a resource would be amazing, and if you still have that base spreadsheet that makes it easier to keep track of anything, or if you have a link to some basic trucking accounting threads, you're welcome to PM me and I'm all eyes here in the forum until I start school in about a month : o)

Biggest problem I see is that though most these forum posts there tends to be so many conflicting opinions that one tends to get lost would love to see a detailed post that is straight foward that incorporates the best of these or to follow one that can stay on track

That won't ever happen because there are 3 million trucks on the road and 3 million different view points on what is the right way to run a truck.
One guy won't run for less than $3 a mile even if he has to sit for a week at a time waiting for that load.
Others can run at $1.50 a mile and make money.
Some guys like new trucks, other say the only way to make money is to buy a old truck and keep it until you die.
Some guys won't run biodiesel, others run nothing but.
So for every view point your gonna have a opposite view point and both think their way is the only true way to make money.
    It's a never ending argument.
