Take all the cash out of your wallet and hide it.

Then drive to the free spot.

Advancing the load isn’t a restraint on our companies PC usage. Having legally available time isn’t either; we can use PC to not interrupt a break that was started at a shipper/receiver even if I still had 2hrs of driving and 5 on my 14. (Doesn’t really sound like I’m getting run that hard).

My interpretation of company policy is that we can use PC to not interrupt a 30min, 2hr (split sleeper), and 10hr breaks. Trying to explain a PC during a 30min break seems a bit risky to me.

I’ve also found the definition of nearest to be vague; is that based on distance or time? Sometimes it can take a long time to go a short distance.

I was near LA; had run out my clock at a receiver. I PC off. Nearest safe haven was just 1mi away and like 5min drive time. I turn right at an intersection when I was supposed to turn left. It ended up taking me an hour to get there. I put comments all around that event. Never heard anything from our log audit.

Hand! You are never going to get a true case of what is right and wrong on this PC issue. When the FMCSA say nearest they mean the best place for you to legally and safely park. I was in Chicago once. I was out of hours (14 hour clock) and there was a convenience store about 1/2 mile away. And they had truck parking. When I went inside to ask the cashier I was told no overnight parking. So I finally had to drive all the way to the TA out on I 80. Nearest means just that. Just remember though, that 10 hour break doesn't start till you are stopped.

Exactly. We have the option to use PC to go restaurants and shopping. In our devices it has a premade comment like “PC to X” and “PC back from X”. Gets used a lot by bobtails waiting on loads; could be used with a trailer too. I have enough problems just trying to park at truck stops. I’m a bit afraid to start parking at stores and restaurants even as a bobtail.

I respect that. Over time you will lose that fear, but NEVER lose the respect of how things can go south if you make a mistake.

Ah, you're up in the metroplex. Big D is right by our main yard. I hate that place lol.

There is a QT just south on loop 12 by I30 that might have parking depending on when you are unloaded. I have other suggestions for that area but I wont post publicly.

Best is a bit vague as well. The best place for me to park would be at our terminal 30mi away... but that’s a no go with all the little truck stops between me and there.

Well the 10hr break should probably not start until stopped. The guidance does mention the need for the driver to still get adequate rest if PC is used. As for what my dispatcher sees, they see it as already ended even if the PC off happened after 3hrs in the berth already. So I might end up getting only 6hrs of uninterrupted sleep.

Ive already told my dispatcher that if PCing off interrupts my rest, I will sit until rested even if it turns my 10 into a 12.

I do find our policy of only logging what they say is the DoT minimums questionable. I’ve not really found where the minimums are listed by the govt. The minimum for loading/unloading is 30min and then logging wise we get in the sleeper berth. Once done and you pull away there’s still a little work to be done, but I was told we already met the minimum for logging it on duty.

Thanks, at my time of day the big d should have parking. My only stipulation was whether I could use not paying as a reason to look for other parking. Pretty sure I’m going to hate that place too.

I am constrained by both the PC regulations and company policy.

Loads ready early. I’ll have enough time to do a 10 before my appt window now. Thanks for the advice.

I used to have a "friend" that let me park just off Irving Blvd. The DFW area to me was not that tough. After years of going there, I found "places" to park if I needed too. Same with Houston. I had a friend that let me in to do a 10-hour break at the Miller Coors brewery out on I 35W. Too bad I could not get any samples! Go to a place often enough over time you find little nooks to park.

My brain HURTS with all these PC threads, but let me tell you how it works for me. I drive intrastate. Not 'local' per se, more intrastate/regional. If I have 2 runs NORTH to Napoleon, from my yard in Mt. Vernon (lookit up if you wish...) Chances are with live unloads I'm gonna run out of my 14 BEFORE I get to my company's yard. My home barn is about 40 miles north of the yard, on my WAY TO the yard. I park at my house, laden or not, (almost ALWAYS not) with about 15 minutes on my 14, and have been LEGAL in doing so, everytime. Qualcomm and company approved, as well as DOT.

Granted, I'm not OTR (anymore, thank Gawd) but have been doing it this way for 5 years, and my company is grateful I've got T/T parking at my home. Not fun to sleep in a daycab.
