Doesn't bother me. But you didn't catch the REAL question within the question. Radios woulda, coulda. shoulda have a certain amount of audio based on the technical standards of the service in which it is used. There only so much audio or this so-called "swing". Just because one is seeing all this "swing" doesn't mean the radio is working better. Contrary to popular CB myth and legend, it drives people crazy if their radio isn't "swinging" like mad. The actual truth is, an AM radio should NOT swing all that much. FM would cause them to go into 'radio withdrawal' as this "swing" that is so desperately sought after is almost imperceptable! Truth is, when a radio goes beyond 100%, you get splatter and distortion---which is what drivers often complain about when hack CB shops get thru snipping this and clipping that. The people who REALLY get "clipped are the misinformed customers who, in search of the biggest, baddest raddidio on the air, fall for all this "peakin' & tunin'" stuff. A CB radio will ONLY do so much! As will any radio!
Sure its worth it 1 S unit = 6 db, if you are not running an amp and don't want that pinched up low level stock microphone sound, and until someone starts paying for my radios then they can tell me what they think it should sound like. Until then I know what sounds good, and its not right out of the box.
CB hasn't been and never will be "Ham Jr". No matter how much the ham guys whine and complain about it.....or report CB shops to the FCC! The hams on here are very knowledgeable, but you wonder about them when they continuously BMW about the world of CB..........on a truckers CB forum no less.... No offense ham guys, but seriously..........
Outlaw CB, your "Where are the Elmer's I so fondly remember" changed my mind as to how I was initially going to reply. I, being 1. African American and 2. Relatively still young; can tell you some stories (2009-present) of my personal adventures and experiences in this hobby with individuals and some clubs..................... Even as an Extra Class Operator, on a few occasions I have had to "go CB verbal with no apologies" on a few ham radio operators coast to coast, questioning my vanity call sign, my occupation (otr trucker/cb user) or making other smart remarks that I simply will not tolerate then, today, tomorrow or in the future. And yes, on finding an true elmer; good luck especially for certain groups of people! In spite of this, the time is a ripe for us truck drivers and regular (blue collar) Americans to take over ham radio; as on the surface this is a great hobby with many avenues for a lifetime of learning and teaching. The ham hobby only needs more "real" people and more youth, not this current fake wanna-be British Royalty, Yale-Harvard Clique "type(s)"; who are primarily "upper class" or wish they were and on average are between 55 to 75+ years and have the #### nerve! Because of my experience in the hobby, for the past 4 years I do go out of my way to insure that every truck driver I meet, gets a copy of my ham introductory packet with information that I put together, detailing the hobby and how to get involved. Here's a secret: If more of you truck drivers were to suddenly begin getting your Technician and General Class License in record numbers, I think funeral homes would begin to get quite busy all over the nation, from those "types" above kicking over in disbelief! Perhaps the ARRL too! Sad but in my opinion, the truth! aimhigh
For you ham guys out there check out 7.195 40 meters, a few truckers and just great guys hanging out there. Mostly in Texas and OK. http://7195group.com/index.php
Holdddddd on Sir! If I buy a cb radio, I will use any channel that I want. It is only because of an unspoken gentleman's agreement that Ch 6 is used by those Big Gun Stations. It seems that they (those same Big Stations) spend more time on Ch 19 than on Ch 6 these days. They exercise little respect toward the truck driver and will often laugh or belittle our so called mud duck radios. What's good for the goose is good for the gander! As far as I'm concerned Ch 6 is open season for anyone's use. Oh yeah, I am also a Extra Class and DID NOT HAVE TO TAKE THE MORSE CODE TEST AS IT WAS/IS NO LONGER REQUIRED Sah! I could post the reg. aimhigh
No Excuses on Da Bowl, if you can hang bump it down, no Crying and ######## there. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uChI5DdoAnU
Ok, I bought a CB when I first started driving. When I ripped myself off with the peak and tune it did seem to perform better. It broke recently, and I bought a stock one. Couldn't really use it, found a used peaked and tuned radio, and it seems to perform better. What am I doing wrong? I went and got my ham ticket a while back, and I still don't understand what I'm doing. I do know that the scam peak and tune myth does seem to improve my experience with the radio. If anyone can plainly explain, how I can take a stock radio and get the result of a hacked up radio, let me know.
Finally a video worth watching, thanks Craig. I guess one should not blindly turn AMC to full without the use of equipment shown in video, I always assumed that if limiter is intact then it was impossible to overmodulate and cause distortion and harmonics, obviously I was wrong.
