The 701 Zebra is all metal and unbreakable, at least so far, and I took a cartridge out of a broken 301 to replace the one I used up.
I've used the G2, they come in extra fine which is a little too fine for me, .7 or .5 mm is fine enough, the roller ball pens tend to run .
We needed to write in all weather, and the Fisher Space Pen is the best for that, I carry 1 just in case. I have enough practice now that I can use any ball point, and use a variety of freebies when the need arises for that.

I use the papermate inkjoys. I occasionally have a problem with too much ink on the log and it smeering but they're comfortable and the only ones I prefer to use. My dad has used the zebras for years and that's all he'll use. It's all just personal preference use whatever you want. I prefer to stay away from the gel pens though too much ink and too much smeering remember those from high school and turning in essays and what not using gel pens. Most can't read my hand writing anyway and throw a gel pen in the mix and it was an automatic F for being unlegible.

Use a medium point sharpie and you get +/- 30 minute tolerance.
