South Dakota doesn’t even have farm plates, just throw a regular county tag on and go trucking. No CDL or annual inspection required.

Joey' first I hope you got that situation with your engine straightened out. I have not been on the site in some time so I hope you resolved that.

As to what happened, there's no easy answer to that. What has transpired is a very complicated set of events that have completely appeared to be one way and then instantly went in a different direction and then something completely out of the blue took over and then all the sudden there were fires burning everywhere that had to be put out, and as I was attempting to put them out, the intention was to douse me with gasoline so that as I was putting the fires out, I would perish.

And yet somehow I'm safe and sound and perfectly fine, but it's not done yet and there's more battles ahead.

As far as the farm Tags I'm just trying to think what I could do to help my brother. He has some construction equipment that he would like to move from where he lives now to his farm, and it's possible some of it could go back and forth to my place which is about 2 and 1/2 hours away

It's also possible, and I'm not trying to skirt any rules, but it's possible we may begin doing work because we have construction equipment and we may begin doing a small amount of work from time to time.

It's just something we're talking about right now but at some point I am going to need to move his equipment however we do that.

Okay I think we have everything now legally situated.

I have to wait until my brother does his taxes which will be in the next few weeks, and then I can legally lease the truck solely to the farm, and I can move his farm equipment as needed to his farm.

Thank you to everyone that replied and especially @brian991219.

I thought that figuring out the lease was going to be the majority of my questions but I have quite a few more. Here goes.

    Do I need Trucking authority?
Do I need IFTA and a log of my mileage?
Do I need a log book or do I need to keep a written record of every pick up and delivery and does that have to be kept and filed in case of an audit?
Do I need to do all of the things I did for my trucking company like driver file, UCR, annual MVR update, etc? I know that I need my medical card which I have.

And what exactly do I display on the truck? I have the ifta stickers but do I need to display my DOT number but not my company name?

I probably will look in the next few weeks to see if I can lease on an owner operator, but if not I really don't want to hang on to my authority if I don't need it.

Something I hadn't thought about is what kind of limits of coverage should there be for liability as far as moving his things?

If he needs a big policy like 750,000, then I would retain The Authority I suppose, but does he really need those kinds of limits for the farm?

Even if $750,000 of coverage was obtained, if it's for a farm truck is that acceptable to FMCSA to keep your Trucking authority?

You only need IFTA if you are running out of state. You will need to keep some sort of track of your mileage. PA has an “agriculture department of husbandry” plate that is a cross between farm and commercial plate. From reading the rest of the thread, I think that would be a good fit for you. Several of my in-laws run those plates, you still are required to have a CDL, but there is no mileage restriction on where you can go, or what you haul, so long as it’s agricultural related. Some guys running eggs into NYC use them, and don’t have a problem

I'm in Ohio, so technically not PA, but have run farm use before I went for hire. I kept 750k liability on the truck, no cargo, since I owned everything I hauled. Was only about $100/month for farm truck insurance. I kept up with filings with FMCSA so my authority was kept active. Change MCS-150 to private property so you're not for hire. Not sure if you technically need IFTA stickers, but I filed mine. The small amount of miles I ran, and usually not out of state, didn't amount to much. Also filed UCR, also pretty cheap. Can file 2290 as ag exempt so no charge there. In Ohio the plate fee goes off of the empty weight of the truck for farm tags, so I had my Freightliner at 18k lbs. Was around $400-600 a year. Had farm name and dot number on the door. Not sure if not for hire on the door helps or not, but couldn't hurt.
