Is this a good alternative for someone who wants to get his/her feet wet in becoming an owner operator? Not having that long-term commitment & obligation plus other expenses and liability that goes along with it seems like a great way to start this venture in becoming an owner operator. Short-term contracts for those that want to test the waters before making that plunge. Is this a good alternative to break out of the company driver mold?

Penske and Ryder contracts are not cheap and generally require very high financial holdings.
aiwiron Thanks this. -
Glad you pointed that out. It seemed like it was too good to be true. There had to be a catch somewhere and you have just pointed it out. Thanks.
-
Very expensive option, plus the maintenance fee is out if this world expensive.

Another reason to steer clear away from them. Thank you guys for the input. Without you guys (experienced vets), I wouldn't be able to make the right decision. You guys are a big help. Thanks for paving the way for the newbies that want to follow along in your footsteps to becoming a successful owner-operator.

Had to rent one for 3 days. The weekly rate on an otr tractor with sleeper is about $800 + 12 cents a mile off the hub every mile you turn.

I bet you don't here them guys complaining about not making any money. Maybe I should start up a truck rental business and cut the rates.
-
Just remember who your customers are and who is driving those trucks! That's why the rates are what they are.....

Im surprised there still in business even with the absurd prices. The Ryder shop in my town always has large amounts of trucks in there.
One time we rented a straight truck from penske and had the rear end leakin a mess. They swapped it out. 2 months later we need another rental, and we get the same one with the leaking rear end. Unbelievable. Swapped it out. We dont use them anymore. -
Man, have they gone up. Last one I rented they were around 500 per week +.06 cents per mile.
Of course that was in 1999 or 2000.
