We use the Omnitracs system with the Samsung tablets connected by Bluetooth to the trucks. Our manager has gotten permission from corporate for us to take the tablets home, provided we don't log on to them outside of work; our supervisor can do whatever editing we need done if there's any errors, which are rare and usually tied in with the connectivity issues. Except for occasional connectivity issues, we've been pretty happy with them. We used Peoplenet before, and hated it.

If you could get all the sensors to report via something like home automation uses, and standardise it, then it would come down to UI and feature set on a tablet app. At this point they're probably all proprietary and closed-source.

You could offer a "translator" hub, that would be a way to pitch it as a money saver, no need to replace sensors or even mix and match them. Interesting thing about tablets is how they can democratise tech, going to happen with marine nav stuff more and more as well.
