Only way for company driver to get per diem to my knowledge is if the company pays you per diem pay otherwise can't be claimed on taxes

You are correct^^^^. The company can pay you per diem, but it cannot be claimed as a company driver

OP seems to be mistaken with what sounds like a tax credit or tax deduction for meals away from home.
When I was receiving “per diem” it was a hourly tax free payment for every hour i was gone from home terminal.... it was quite sweet.

Per diem wasn't eliminated, per se. Rather non-reimbursed employee business expenses, which includes per diem, was eliminated. If you are a w2 construction worker, you can no longer deduct work boots, etc. For most workers, the doubling of the standard deduction more than made up for losing that $200 deduction. But it really hurt many company drivers.

Per diem still exists. Stevens pays 40 cpm 10 of which is per diem and not taxed.

Don’t confuse ‘per diem’ with ‘M&IE’
