Good to have read that you found a Honest company to work for however they are few & far between. A good known example is 'Yellow' which starts with how the CEO carried on about the union fabricating something that wasn't true. They were hemorrhaging caring only to line their own personal pockets not caring about the employees. Percentage (%) pay it hit and miss and in these times its missing for a good majority from the design of many trucking companies finding sneaking ways to trick a driver or owner op out of money.
That's the key, 'finding honest people' in Trucking' almost become like finding a leprechaun with a pot of gold. However, I'm not saying there are none at all because the current company (so far) I'm leased onto seem fair. But it's been a challenge finding one like them. And being paid by the mile without insurance deductions, plates, tolls paid for including a fuel Surcharge IMHO is way better than trying to guess a rate con with a dozen other deductions.
Percentage Pay Question

My neighbor works for a regional heavy haul company on a percentage
Think the driver gets 20% of the gross to the truck .
Company has 8 trucks and has been around for 30 years .
And usually works the loads so the drivers are back home to the terminal every weekend
Not much turnover with the drivers , my neighbor has been there 5 or 6 years .
the company doesn’t keep the $$ a secret
Half the time the dollar amount is on the cargo manifest when the shipper hands it to the driver.
The basic rule with the company owner is if the truck doesn’t gross $10 a loaded mile . It sits in the terminal . They won’t even crank the truck for less than that . And the drivers get paid $550 a week if they are not running .
if you’re working on percentage and the company isn’t transparent with the gross to the truck , they are cheating you . Why else would they hide it ?2rescuekids Thanks this. -
Cheat or not cheat, if you are happy with what you get, get it, if not, don't get it.

This is the exception not the rule. Go for the jobs that pay hourly, you will 9 out of 10 times make more by the hour.

I used to get paid % of gross flatbed work most drivers did.

Oh for sure .
when he was telling me he was enrolling in the community college CDL class and wanted to get out of welding and into trucking , I cautioned him about the huge number of immigrants flooding the trucking industry and pushing down wages and suggested he find a company that was very picky about who they hired and paid good and treated their drivers with respect .
and to take his time with selecting a company .
One of the recruiters at his class was from a company that hires new drivers with no experience and trains them to do heavy haul and oversize , and the main client of the company does a intensive background check on the drivers ,
The drivers have to be native born citizens , and have a good credit history and no unpaid child support and no liens or judgements or foreclosures or repossessions etc
And have to have a spotless criminal record , and a clean driving record ,
And the siblings and parents of the driver get the same background check , along with the spouse and in-laws .
of the 30 drivers in the class only 3 were eligible to apply and two of those didn’t want to bother with filling out the forms and waiting 6 to 8 weeks for the background check.
The main client is the one that decides if a particular driver can enter their facility.
and that decision has to be made before the driver arrives . -
Some drivers don't realize they are under paid.
