I own a small equipment rental company in Northern Nevada. We do not haul for hire, just our own stuff, and do not leave the state for day to day business, therefore, I have an Intrastate Nevada DOT permit. We have ordered a new 35 T trailer and need to pick it up in Nebraska. It will be a S/A tractor heading over and a new, unladen trailer coming back. What permits are necessary?

Just rent a Penske tractor, or have someone deliver it to you.

Single axle tractor with state commercial license -or- apportioned registration?????

J J Keller for temps but OOIDA could give some legal input since it is new stuff 'in transit' may not require temps.

Your state motor truck assn could also direct you to someone local to help.

Time and round trip fuel/wages; Trailer Transit might be cheaper as it is a one way kinda costs.

Waiting on a quote for rental now. Seems like such a simple thing, but transporting the new trailers triggers the definition of “commerce”. Trucking quotes are more than double what we can do it for. I get it, we all need to make money but $5-6k to haul an empty trailer 1100 miles is a lot for us.

$6 a mile is nuts. Last trailer I bought we got a quote for under a buck fifty — but we allowed the trailer to be loaded for the trip out.

Years ago we just had intrastate authority. We would buy fuel and trip permits for every state on the rare occasion we crossed state lines.
Do you have a dot number? You aren’t required to have one if you are intrastate here in TN. Without a dot number you may not be able to leave the state without one

If I’m reading this right, you’ve got a Nevada DOT permit and a single-axle tractor heading out to grab an empty 35T. If the tractor’s got a commercial plate and insurance, you should be fine unless you’re over on weight. Coming back, the dealer should give you a transit plate for the trailer. Since it’s empty and not for-hire, I don’t see IFTA or IRP coming into play.

    Is your tractor plated commercial?
