I spent several years working on docks, I blew a motor last Oct and I've paid my taxes (even late fee penalties because someone decided my taxes were due Mar 15 vs April 15). I have to say that my days are way better now than my dock days. Sure sum days suck on the road but everyday sucked on the docks.

Pioneer staging/loading/unloading for $13-$16.50 (raise progression). Less than a year at Blue??? can't remember now. Loading/unloading propane tanks on trucks for 8 bucks an hour. Loaded trucks at hayes-lemmerz (foundry and was hot af) for $10. I also staged product at a dollar general DC for $11-$14 (again raises) Loaded trucks at thermafiber $13.

Even if I was making the same money now as I was then this would still be better. Truthfully there were time that I have made less, particularly my first year. As a matter of fact there was times I was driving this truck for free (meaning I took no pay and left it all in my company). To me it's the freedom of owning my own company and being on the road that makes it all better to me. I mean working inside drives me nuts, the same lights, same people, same same same.... I don't know man, this is just more my gig and it makes me happier. Sure I know the shoe can be on the other foot for some.

For some the dock is a place of resurrection. A new life moved forward a pallet at a time. Even if they worked 16 hours plus got 70 dollars with 35 going to the room for today. It's still something.

I've been there, except I didn't have a room at the time I was living in my car in a Kroger's parking lot, taking bird baths in the bathroom sink at the gas station on the corner. Being woke up in the mornings by a fellow McDonald's coworker to go to work. Washed my clothe's in the MacDonald's washing machine. Yeah, at 19 to 21, those were some rough years. Sure the job and situation changed but it stayed kinda the same through those years. Had another bout of that in my thirties when I lost my job due to a medical condition. Biggest difference then was I was supporting a wife. My wife had an interesting look on her face after our house was foreclosed on and I told her that we were moving into the back of my pick up truck in the camp ground... Luckily a friend let us stay at their house for a couple months till I was back on my feet.

Kudos to you for working through that without becoming a criminal. Making an honest living is something to be proud of.

    Hm.

And to think we sold our home to pay the student loan debts among other things. The #### thing is paid and good riddiance. But your history shows way more of a bad road than mine.

I hope things are going well with you and yours today. No one should have to endure that kind of living.
