Interested in hearing from drivers who have driven the 389 and the 579, curious about the handling difference and drivability. I understand fuel mileage will be better (no matter the transmission) on the 579.
Thanks in advance, trying to decide between flats or heavy haul and staying with reefers.
Cheers!

Aero will always do better but I've seen 6.2 from a 388 Peterbilt, the 389s low roof brother. ISX 13over 3.90 on tall rubber pulling 50k pneumatic. So if it's set up better and not dragging a 25ton parachute I'm sure it could almost break into the 7s

388 is the flat top? Thought it was the different hood that wasn't straight out but it was a smaller down sloped hood? The Canadian favoUrite ... although I prefer the 389 myself ...
I don't think the fuel mileage will be that big of a difference if you are going to be doing flats or heavy haul or any open deck work where your fuel mileage is all over the map anyway, or pulling reefer where you are often close to gross weight ... I do not believe the shape of the hood to be that much of a factor in determining fuel economy, I place more value on the average speed driven and HOW it is driven. I drove a w900L for 3 years with a 6nz cat, pulling heavy reefers mostly, and always averaged 6.5 +/- 0.25. I talk to drivers sometimes at the fuel pump (or at the counter of infinite knowledge) if I see they have a new truck and ask them how they like it how it is on fuel if it's reliable all that. Lots of them say they are still getting 6 to 7 mpg. The guys getting 8 or higher are either pulling light weight or driving below 60.
What do you think the resale price will be of that 579? I bet you it won't be anything near what the 389 will be. Or look at it this way. Find 2 similar trucks, one with a hood and an aero one, of roughly the same price, and look at the mileage difference. The hoods almost always have a crazy amount of miles on them and are selling for the same price as the aero truck with like 500-600k. And, I bet you will enjoy driving the big hood much more than the aero truck.
To each their own, though.Cottonmouth85 Thanks this. -
The hood always wins and yeah 388 is flat top/snub nose. Plus i wouldn't want to look at that goofy dashboard they put in the 579. I like my gauges.

I really don't want to argue this a whole lot ... but either of them can have either roof ....

Thanks, any thoughts on how the two handle? I have driven the 579 but not the 389, especially interested in comments about the front air suspension.
Really don't like the condo trucks as much as I thought and I'm interested in something with the Unibilt style sleeper though I'd be open to the T660 as well. -
After sitting behind a long Peterbilt hood my entire career I made a change and I'm almost ashamed to ad
-
What did you change to?
-
Oh my post cut off.... oops
Almost ashamed to admit how much I like my T660. -
The T660 is also on my list, how do you compare it with the 389? Do you have a Studio Sleeper and if so does it have the couch?
Driving through the mountains which do you prefer handling wize, I'm sure the KW gets better mileage and they each have narrow cabs which is what I'm looking for.
