Hey yall, I am looking to enter the world of trucking. As I have posted elsewhere, I have pretty simple requirements (at least I think they are). My main problem is I want to take my cat with me after training (or before if at all possible). I will go from one side of the country to the other, as long as I can have my cat. I have no training, not completely green I do not think, but no CDL. I am on a volunteer fire department and I drive the trucks. The main truck has airbrakes on it, if outside the FD it would require a CDL (FD is excempt from CDL laws). Are there any good companies that I can train with that will allow me to bring my cat, and pay decent, benefits all that stuff, without me having to buy a truck? Someday maybe I would like to have my own truck, but not until I know what I am doing. I have applied to several, but none allow pets in their trucks. The recruiter for Prime said yes, but failed to mention that is for a leased truck. Just want my cat... Thanks for any helpful advice.

Yes, you are green. It's not meant to be an insult; it's just the simple fact of the matter. An RVer can have air brakes, but that doesn't make them ready to get into commercial driving. There's a lot more to it than just air brakes. This isn't to say you can't make it - I'm sure you can. But know where you stand beforehand.
As for the pet question, it varies between companies. If there's a truck stop near you, I'd recommend you go there. Look for the various free publications handed out there... one's called Truck Job Seekers. You'll see various advertisements for entry level companies. Call them and ask what their pet policies are, and get the answer straight from the source.
You can also get the numbers for these companies from their websites, and you'll talk to someone in recruiting, who should know enough about the company to be able to answer that question. If a recruiter is unable to answer a question like that, I'd be very wary of that company. I'll save you the trouble of looking two of them up... Swift Transportation is 1-800-800-2200 and Schneider is 1-800-447-7433 (you'll see it on the back of their trailers). Best of luck to you. -
I know I am green, but least I have driven something bigger than a toyota. From what I read on here, just because the company says it is fine, does not mean that is what is really happening. There is nothing near me... I see trucks all the time, but they rarely stop. I live in the middle of nowhere. My neighbor is a trucker and he said he would bring me some info when he comes back this week. I really want to do this, but need someone to train me. I know I need training, but also am more than willing to learn. I just want a company that will treat me like a person and allow me to have my pet along with decent pay

Something like a pet policy, they'd be more likely to be straightforward with you on. It's when they talk about how much money you'll make and how you'll be home every weekend, etc. that they start ############ you. If in doubt, ask if they have a downloadable .pdf file of the company handbook available, or if it's just posted online. Pet policies will be included in those.
You've driven something larger than a regular passenger car, and that is a good thing. Still, this is a whole new ball game you're getting into.
Are you looking for a company which offers a CDL school in-house, or something where you'd go to your local community college and pay out of pocket? -
If I can take my cat with me, I really dont care that much about being home, at least for a long while. When not at work I just sit at the house, I want to travel. I am looking for something that is inhouse. I would have to quit my current job either way. I will call the Prime recruiter back tommorow and discuss it with her.

There's plenty of companies to choose from... Swift Transportation, Central/Central Refrigerated, Werner Enterprises, Stevens Transport, Schneider National, C.R. England, TMC, etc, etc.
What are you looking to get into, exactly? Dry vans? Refrigerated vans? Flatbeds? -
I was told by a Stevens recruiter they did not allow pets, was told by someone who drove for CR England the same thing. Honestly... not exactly sure. I prefer to not have to load/unload. Something that would pay good and give me miles. Not sure as to exactly what each would require, what would be different between them. I am looking on Schneider's website and cannot find a place for a newbie to apply. I will look at Werner in a moment.

Well, it all depends. If you just want to sit behind a steering wheel, and either just drop your trailer or sit in the truck while it's being unloaded, flatbeds definitely won't be your thing. You might also be better off to seek out companies which don't haul hazmat, as a chemical facility isn't very likely to allow drivers to take their pets into their facility.
-
I do not mind some physical work. What all do flatbed drivers have to do?
-
Save time with Central. No pets.. wish they'd reconsider but they have multiple reasons for not allowing them..
