Id still go with pgt maverick is another big name company with crappy equipment. Contact Rhonda Yost at ryost@pgttrucking.com. She's helping me out. If you want to go with a big name company try tmc like I said.

I'm with PGT now. I am an o/o in the Cleveland area. The loads range from local, reginal, to otr. Its not a bad company to haul for. Pretty much all steel, mostly coils. I pull a flat, some guys use a covered wagon. If all I hauled was coils and sheets, a wagon would come in handy, but with hauling pipe the side kit is in the way. Also if your in a heavy steel area you'll stay busy. But if you get in a area where there isn't a lot of steel you are limited to what you can haul. Home time is good also. On a 5 day week, I may spend 3 nights in the truck, with weekends at home.

I was with Builders (BTC) for almost 6 years. I started as a company driver, became a trainer and then the field recruiter. They started as a very good company - the finest owners in the business. But, as time went on the front office personnel became all about the money. The focus moved off of taking care of the driver and not taking care of the driver became more and more the norm rather than the exception.

They have gone to paperless log and STILL try to tell the driver they need to pick up a load even though they have zero hours of drive-time available.
If you have a problem with your dispatcher - the driver is the one that has to suck it up. Don't expect them to make the dispatcher step his/game up.
And, since they have gone percentage, your deadhead mileage is still the same (or more) while other companies have cut their deadhead mileage. Guess it depends on how much freight you have.

I enjoyed my time with Builders at first. My last year and a half I worked more in the corporate side of things. If I knew then what I know now - I would have had to question my willingess to work for them. Again - the owners (Frank Phillips and Sons) are class acts. I have NOTHING negative to say about them. But the ones that are in charge of the day-to-day operation leave a lot to be desired. If I were just starting out in the flatbed industry I would choose TMC or Maverick if you want to feel appreciated for the work that you do.

There are a lot of fine folks that work at Builders, but the foolishness of the top-echelon corporates kind of squelch them out.

sorry it took so long to reply. i'm an owner op, i'm not sure what the lease drivers make. i had a friend who did it. he really liked it. they treat you as an owner op. one thing you'll have to get used to is when you call dispatch the 1st question is where you want to go. i usually give them a dollar amount i'm looking to get and they give me destinations that they have that are in that range. also, what terminal will you be out of? i'm in the cleveland terminal.lastly, use your phone and take a lot of pictures of your truck inside and out. get multiple shots of any damage. e-mail them to yourself and save them. if you quite you want proof that you recieved the truck in that condition. after you e-mail them to yourself, send them to the shop forman also. that way he has a date when you sent them, and cant say the pictures are new. if i can help you in any way feel free to ask. ang good luck. PAYDAY.
