IMHO a post trip inspection is far more important. As @MACK E-6 noted, finding a problem just before you are ready to roll to an appointment is NOT the time to find out your steer tire is flat.
I saw this today at the rest area just inside Texas, coming from Louisiana. Mid day and his curtains are closed.
Let's just hope he doesn't wake up and get behind the wheel and start driving without at least a walk around...

Edit to add: notice the sidewall damage and scrapes on the rim, and how the valve stem is bent over. I wager a week's wages he curbed the tire on the way into the parking spot at the rest area and bent the valve stem. A post trip inspection would have heard the leak. He could have immediately called for road service. Instead, the best case scenario is he wakes up early and discovers the problem in time to get road service and not be late.
Worst case? He doesn't see my handwritten note under his windshield wiper, then gets on the freeway in the middle of miles of construction zone with nowhere to stop.
Phantom Pre-Trip inspections.
