    No its not.

Im pretty sure there is a ghost of a old retired bear hunting me in my dreams for 60 over one day. He cannot prove it and had to turn back at the state line that day. I have not been back since lol.

Its alot of work on a old steam train. Lumping that coal or wood by shovel to keep the pressure up. Or managing the oil burn on a mountain grade to get a few thousand ton over the top. Engineer finds himself fighting for traction that really isnt there. Nurse the poor engine a little bit.

Then there is greasing all around constantly checking for everything. Even the smallest out of order is a threat to the engine and indirectly a threat to the railroad schedule of the day. There are other trains coming your way.

And safety is number one above all. If I was looked at as I was a wild trucker for train stuff it would NEVER happen. You want steady eddies who care for safety above all. Yes there is a little fun and games here and there. For example a district super went for a ride on a NKP 765 in mountain country. He hooked on 44 coal cars to the back way more than needed for braking to make engine work. Well would you know it the first major tunnel it hit, the engine was on her knees upgrade. The stack steam cleaned decades of desiel off the arched roof above and covered the crew in gunk. This was not exactly intentional but can be very funny when it's not thought all the way through.

There are steam that works everyday in freighting and occasionally in the UK they have mainline steam engines that come out in the frozen dead of winter to rescue a few hundred commuters when electric fail and desiels froze. And here is the Tornado class engine hooking on for Liverpool downtown to rescue them.

To me the very best in steam comes with children to haul in Lancaster PA for instance when they are not running freight days in Strasburg East to Paradise on US 30 and back. (There is literally another name for it but it will not pass censorship) any time we can do that, Im pretty sure I would be willing to shovel that 6 ton of coal for a hour out and back for free. Even with a bad back. There are some things worth more than money.

Once in a while Union Pacific deploys the Challenger or the Big Boy against a modern 12000 to 16000 ton train upgrade in the west for hundreds of miles if need be which is what they were designed for in wartime during the 40's Relatively rare but it does happen today in modern times. Shakes the very ground. (Usually there are additional engines to protect and assist them in that work)
