I take it back. I guess I AM overweight. 6' 2" & 230lbs. puts me in the "overweight" bracket. Actually on the verge of "obese".

Funny, I don't LOOK or FEEL overweight.....but I guess if the government says I am....I am.(this is where I roll my eyes)

Can't a guy just be solid and built. So is Brock Lesner "obese"?

According to the formula, yes. But anyone looking at a builder will know that there is a difference between someone who is fat, and someone who is musclebound. I'll give you 3 guesses as to which Brock falls into.

Um, I'm not a student at Stevens yet, but I'm pretty sure lying about anything related to medical qualifications - or anything, for that matter - with a regulated entity is really, really bad advice.

He meant "give up Sundays". See, in the trucking industry, you will be giving up a lot of your Sundays.

Yeah, I know. Sundays, I'll give up. Giving up sundaes, though? Well, that's just asking too much of a guy!

Let me tell you all something about BMI. I believe it was formulated by the insurance companies as a tool to charge higher premiums for life insurance (my opinion). I remember in the Army they went from the pinch test to the body fat calculator. If you went by the BMI charts, 80 percent of the people in the military would be overweight. My BMI is 33.14 and I am 5'10" at 230 lbs and age 60. It says I should be between 132 and 174. B.S. I got down to 175 a few years back and I looked like S%$t. I looked like I came out of a concentration camp.

The Army and Navy jointly developed the Body Fat Calculator and according to it, my body fat % is 17.51 and they consider a healthy range of 8-19%. So I am not obese but rather healthy. It considers your sex, age, weight, waist size, and neck size.

So, with that being said, the BMI is a joke and no indication of health. And yes, overweight people tend to have sleep apnea more than skinny folks (excuse the pun) but I know a lot of skinny people that can saw logs with the best of them.

It so happens that I have Obstructive Sleep Apnea and had it when I was in excellent physical shape and could run 10 miles in under 80 minutes. I was still on active duty in Germany and my wife said I snored bad. I would be tired all day and if I had to sit at my desk I would fall asleep. The Army didn't diagnose it then and finally got help after I retired thus I'm screwed out of disability for it. First night on my CPAP was great. I couldn't remember when I felt so good getting up. It made a difference in my job performance and alertness. Now with only 5 hours sleep, I can work all day and not get tired.

If you find you need Redbulls or energy shots to make it through the day, you should consider getting checked. With sleep apnea, your breathing stops momentarily many times throughout the night and prevents you from going into REM sleep where you need to get to to fully charge your batteries. When I did my sleep study, they found that I stopped breathing more than 120 times during the night. That will definitely shorten your life span not to mention cause premature heart failure among other things.

Bottom line is that it can affect your health as well as your safety and the safety of others out there on the highway.

    IMHO

    Insha'Allah

    Doc
