Last night I focused my attention on finding a used reefer and I noticed that there are countless carrier and t/k models to pick from. How do you make heads or tails of which model is right? I mean I do read up on the original literature and understand what it’s saying but still. Maybe ill go flatbed lol

What do you plan on doing with it? If you can find or wait for a new one I would, swore I was never buying a used trailer again but mine got totaled and didn’t have much of a choice, had a TK S700 on it that I just scrapped for a sb210 I had in the yard, my old trailer had a 200 on it, do LTL at 0* and produce, if you do a lot of ice cream may want to look for the 310/330/700

Just get a carrier x4 7500 it will be great for produce and frozen in the summer months.

A TK S-600 and S-700 Precedent are CARB Compliant forever.
A TK C-600 Precedent is only CARB Compliant for the first seven years after the date of manufacture, after that it’s not compliant anymore, and there’s no way to make it compliant forever.
A Carrier X4 7300, 7500 and the Vector 8600 models are CARB compliant for the first seven years after the date of manufacture, after the seven years you can purchase a EES DPF kit from Carrier that’ll cost around $10k and it’ll be certified CARB Compliant Forever.
Carrier’s newest model, the X4 7700 is CARB Compliant Forever.
And yes, there’s a lot of companies that still run older Non-Compliant TRU’s in CA, but starting Dec. 31, 2023, owners of refrigerated warehouses or distribution centers, seaport facilities and intermodal rail yards greater than or equal to 20,000 sq.-ft., will be required to register with CARB, pay fees every three years, and report all the TRUs that operate at their facility. Grocery stores with a building size of 15,000 sq.-ft., or greater are also required to comply.
TRU owners will also be required to report all units, including those based out of state, that operate in California. Owners will be required to pay fees and affix a CARB compliance label.
There’s alot of Cold Storage and Grocery DC’s in CA that will check your CARB issued ARB number using an online database to see if you’re compliant or not before they let you enter their facility and pick up or deliver a load.
If you’re looking for a used reefer trailer, just buy one with a TK S-600 or 700, regardless if you run in CA and you’ll be compliant forever.
Also I noticed trailer prices for trailers with a Carrier unit installed are considerably less than the same trailer with a TK compliant unit installed.Last edited: Jul 4, 2024
