Hitchhiker in custody after holding truck driver at gunpoint in B.C. Interior
A man is in custody after holding a truck driver at gunpoint near Kamloops, B.C. on Monday evening.
At 6:30 p.m. PT on Nov. 6, Clearwater and Kamloops RCMP say they received reports that a hitchhiker was holding a commercial truck driver at gunpoint.
Police say the driver was heading towards Kamloops when he picked up the hitchhiker near Avola along Highway 5.
Mounties were able to locate and pull over the truck. The driver was unharmed.
The hitchhiker was taken into custody by RCMP. He is previously known to police.
Though picking up a hitchhiker is illegal in B.C., Kamloops RCMP Cpl. Jodi Shelkie said the driver will not face any fines.
"In this situation we don't give a guy a ticket after he's been held at gunpoint," Shelkie said.

Doesn't suprise me. I was told at one time that Clearwater has more ex-criminals and released mental patients per capita than anywhere else in BC.
On an unrelated note, it was also said at one time the Clearwater liquor stores sold more alcoholic beverages per person than any other city in the province. That's not a mystery though. Most people drink to forget they live there
themikep87, Jazz1 and not4hire Thank this. -
Alcoholic beverages? You mean the litre jugs of vanilla extract the corner store kept behind the counter.

In Avola maybe. Clearwater's a bit bigger than that lol.

So the driver didn't actually pick up a hitchhiker? Looks like he hijacked the truck at the million dollar ####ter and held the driver hostage instead? That place usually has a few people around there all the time so its kind of suprising that it went down there. Smart thinking on behalf of the driver. Bet he was scarred ####less the 2.5 hour drive to the Kamloops scales. I know I would've been.

Either he was someone experienced with trucking or truck was a automatic .. that's some tough territory for someone with zero experience driving a big rig

Avola to Kamloops is pretty flat for the most part. One or 2 really sharp corners are all that really come to mind. And that stupid roundabout in Clearwater.

The truck driver was driving the truck at gunpoint from Avola to Kamloops. The kidnapper attempted to drive away from the Kamloops scale and ditched and rolled the truck.magoo68 Thanks this.

Article makes it sound like kidnapper took over at some point before scale either way a scary ride for the driver
