Unfortunately, I could see this, in some states, turning into CDL A licenses having to be checked and renewed yearly, or bi-yearly, like the med card fiasco; lets hope not.....

either that, or like the med card, a CDL driver might have to foot the bill for a yearly background check.

i can see into the not too distant future, where a citizens activist group will lobby for more controls over CDL drivers in general

    glad i retired.

I'm pretty much retired from OTR driving now myself. We still farm, but are scaling back more and more each year. All 4 kids have long since grown and gone and have no interest in farming, can't really blame 'em though. Plus, it's getting harder to find good reliable help anymore, let alone the weather, and at my age, I just can't do what I used to be able to do.... I still keep the A & med card up though.

It seems like the existing laws/regulations on us are adequate to keep things safe on the roadways, but enforcement has fallen short as illustrated in another new article about the NH crash: Probe Prompted By N.H. Motorcyclists' Deaths Led To More Than 800 Mass. Driver License Suspensions

yes, i agree that there are plenty of current laws/regulations on CDL holders, and that either law enforcement or individualk states are lacking in keeping up with the files, but hey, they have computer systems, and workers, why can't they do a better job for our tax monies we give them freely each year..??

i believe that as i said, citizens rights groups will push thier legislators for even more clamping down on us first, as we are a very easy target to attack.

i put blame on ALL CDL schools, be they mills or community colleges, or company owned.

    they continually chrun out jackwagons.

true, that NO school is perfect, but i do not see much in the way of "standardized training" across the boards.

then too, we have all the dregs of sociiety that cannot do nothing else, or have such a horrid past, that are accepted into this industry, if only because of kick backs from student loan banks, or i dare to say, fraudulently being accepted into training.

ten we also ALLOW foriengers that cannot read or speak the English language sufficiently enough come here on Visa's to wreak havoc on on roads, by bringing with them, their boozing habits, which they think since it acceptable in THIER country, must be acceptable in ours.

i feel bad for all of you still in this industry, to be identified as a "trucker", in the same sentance, when you talk to someone about such horrible wrecks.......it's like you get the "evil eye" from those you talk with, that you are a trucker. one which garners no respect, all due to the jackwads wreaking thier havoc out there.

yes, many people "group/profile" a certain industry/trade all into one of loathness due to the actions of others.

we (in the end) are really RESPONSIBLE for all that hatred, cuz we "as a group" do not band together like some truckers do in other countries, to police ourselves, and rather "let the lawmankers and citizens rights groups" do it for us...then we complain of way too much government intrusion.

so who is ultimately to blame for our troubles...????

    look in the mirror..............that's who.

So, you think it would be great if you needed to report yearly to the DMV office to prove to them that you are still a good law-abiding driver, and of course pay additional fees for them to "ensure that you're still road worthy", huh.

No, the problem lies jointly with the individual that committed the crimes (multiple states), the government agencies (multiple states) involved that allowed him to continue to operate a motor vehicle, as in this case, and the carrier that he drove for that allowed him to continue to drive. There are already many laws on the books to address criminal behavior; however, they obviously are not enforced, and, if they are, the penalties are minimal.

We are already taxed, regulated, fined, harassed, and penalized to the max. Why should the majority of law-abiding drivers/carriers be saddled with additional laws and regulations and have to jump through hoops, due to the criminal actions of a few. No, agencies need to enforce the laws already on the books and deal with the criminals accordingly when they are arrested, not dream up more feel good laws that will only affect the law-abiding folks.
