Thanks for your input, behind the scenes.
Although they still lose their jobs, I prefer to use the term "laid off" in this situation. When you fire someone it means (to me) that they did something due to conduct to get themselves to not be in a job anymore. But in this case where there are too many employees and not enough revenue coming in ... I prefer the term, "laid off". But that does not help the pain for those three people.
So, goodbye to the buffet. I really will miss that.
I think you are right, changes will be coming sooner than December 31, 2010.
I made a point of telling employees at Flying J's and through the corporate contact information on the website that I wished ALL employees could go from Country Market to Denny's.
I met a waitress at the Wytheville, VA Flying J who had been with them, I think forty years. I wonder what will happen to her.

Unfortunately this happens most anytime there is a change in ownership of any company. The brass holes come in and assure everyone that they "will have their jobs." All they are doing is trying to buy time until they get set up the way they want.
"No, you likely WON'T have a job, but we aren't gonna tell you that. We NEED you right now, and we will continue to NEED you right up to the point that we find we can screw you and hire our own people." -
Welp I dont know about the rest of u guys. But i'm going to fuel at LOVES or TA from now on. ANd probably eat thier to. I'm just 1 driver, but maybe i can make a difference

HFC Thanks this. -
The restaurant at the Flying J will be converting to Denny's this October.
They say no one will be laid off,but we will see.
When the merger was official this past July 1st Pilot management stated no one will loose their jobs.Well, two members of maintenance have been laid off and now they want to cut our hours. We have are ten times busier because the number of customers have more than tripled. We now have Pilot's customers. We are having a very hard time keeping the place clean.
Some days it is impossible and Pilot wants to cut our hours. Now ,three nights a week there is just one employee in the store from 11pm to 5am One person to handle everything. The management at Pilot is insane.
This merger was a very bad idea.HFC Thanks this. -
There is a new Love's truck stop opening right across the street from the Flying J here in Fargo,ND
The Love's truck stop will open at the end of October.HFC Thanks this. -
I can't remember the exact circumstances ... but I was listening to NPR (National Public Radio) about a week ago and they interviewed someone who was told that yes, there will be a change in ownership of this business and yes, you will have a job when the purchase of the business finally goes through.
Then he found out that he had to train his replacement for two weeks, who was going to get less money than he was making at the present time and after that training period he was going to be laid off. -
loss of the buffet, No biggie.
It ceases to amaze me to see how many people leave the bathroomn with out washing their hands , and head right over the the buffet and start grazing.
And the same for some resturant employees,,, playing with hair, coughing, sneezeing, scratching themsleves, etc. then going over to the buffet and refreahing it. -
Well, I mourn the loss of the buffet. But, yes you are quite right since I have seen people leave the restroom and NOT wash their hands and then go over to the buffet. YUCK.
So, that part of the equation will be controlled but that STILL means that the employee part has not been and Denny's will have to clamp down on bad health practices of the staff.
I don't think that off the menu items are not exempt from bad things. I did see a waitress at the Country Market in the Kenly, NC Flying J sneeze into her hands and then pick up a plate, silverware, cup and saucer. -
I ate at my first Denny's, in a Flyin J, in Albuquerque a few days ago. I think it is a good move. It was good and quick.

Pilot is not buying Flying J.It is a merger only.
Now,Pilot is trying to get rid of the store managers, both general and maintenance,so that Pilot can get their own people into those positions
for less money and make sure Pilot policy is followed.
