I have never felt that my straps pull any direction other than down! All of my straps, as most of us are, are on one side of my bed.

Even when I use my portable straps they are all on my drivers side.

With a load like that where it can easily move when u tighten ur straps , the side that you are tightening it will pull the freight that direction... when you alternate them it will pull it in both directions giving you more stability... 90 percent of loads u can get away with tightening just 1 side... just have be careful with loads of pipe or any bundled material that can easily move
