The GPS is handy when you are looking for a street and its dark as heck out and impossible to see the street sign until you are right on top of it or there is a tree in the way. Yes, us old buzzards can adapt to new tech too.

There's advantages to both for sure, but as someone said there is a benefit to using both, like I do. I check the suggested route by the GPS against my PAPER map, adjust and put the map away. Its nice to have a moving screen instead of trying to find the pad of paper, turn on the light and watch the road at the very same time.
Rand Mcnally has a GPS now ,and its actually for truckers. Low bridges, tunnels for my hazmat, one ways streets...truckstops/fuel, repair shops. It keeps track of my hrs and will show where i stopped and for how long if I ask it. It will record the trip so you can bring it up for the next time. It gives and ETA and tracks fuel millage....ect There awesome, but I will ALWAYS have my map.

    I like maps.
You can open them, instead of having to turn them on.
    Maps don't talk back.
Maps don't lie to you. You might read them wrong, but they don't lie.
You can carry them around with you.
Maps bring back memories; they are very nostalgic.
You can draw on them and make them really personal.
A nice big map gives you a nice big perspective on where you're going--much more than one screen worth at a time.

i love these super truckers that have been driving around for thirty years and know all the routs and docks. think back to when you first started driving... way back... would you have refused help, of any kind, to avoid all the frustration involved in learning the ropes. or should all the new guys have to suffer all the hardships you did so they can be worthy. this i will tell you. i just spent a 2 weeks navigating through horrible winter storms for thousands of miles, in a truck i'd never driven, to a large city i'd never been to before. then p&d's for three days strait in that city and back again. i don't even know what i did with my sunglasses it's been so long since i've needed them and i did it all without incident. never got lost once. never went down the wrong street... as far as i'm concearned if a GPS sends me on the wrong rout 2 times out of 10... that's 8 less times i'll screw up. well worth it. i'm sure the day will come when i'm a super trucker too but until then i'll take all the help i can get... paper or plastic... whatever it takes.

    Well Temp,
I guess I fall into the old truckers column. Been at this nearly 40 years.
I use a TND 710 and love it.
But when I started, I had a case of paper maps, and still do...somewhere.
I think the problem here is you came on board and insulted all of us that have been doing this just fine for years by telling us ...whether you choose to admit it or not, GPS navigation is here to stay. it works and is a highly valuable resource to professional drivers. the question is not. whether or not to use it, but how to use it.
Did you even once stop to think that your condesending, more smart than us old dogs attitude is what is most upsetting?
The real question is (in my mind) who are you to tell us how to do a job we've done successfully for years?
What makes you so all fired knowledgeable that you should insult us with a pissant attitude?
Why do you care how we do it?
It's attitude like that causes division between us 'old dogs' and you young pups.
Maybe when you are dry behind the ears, you'll understand.
In the meantime, your apology is accepted.

This boy already knows it all, so we can't teach him anything. Some guys are just born knowing everything there is to know.

What if your paper map is laminated? Is it paper or plastic?

I use anything that I think might be helpful. I've been known to use more than one GPS, and my truck atlas, and local state maps and the directions sent by my company and to call the shipper/receiver for directions.

But one thing for sure, none of them can fix stupid, and there is an abundance of that out there.
