By the way Ginseng, doesn't Arrow start off at .34 and move to .36 after 90 days? Don't forget tarp pay $30. It isn't much, but it counts.
please give your advice

Ginseng, just plan on the bare minimum paycheck for awhile. I'm sensing you are tight on finances, don't count on Arrow trucking saving you just yet. He is not even through orientation yet. Will he go with a trainer? Might have to wait awhile. I'm hearing some new hires are waiting for weeks to get a trainer. Do not assume Arrow will be your saving grace. Just some friendly advice. Changing jobs is expensive....

I don't bring much food on the road with me, what i keep in the fridge in the truck is drinks, raspberry yogurt and fruits. I eat ones a day and spend about $20-30 on food at a restaurant.

My dh just started driving this year, and based on what he has brought home so far this year imho, it would not be a good idea for you to stop working,
I have been told repeatedly that things will get better or improve, but so far I am having a hard time seeing better. But maybe it's just the economy.
There are two truck drivers at the church we attend, and both of them have said this has been one of the hardest years they can remember ever in trucking, one of these drivers has been driving a little over twenty years, and the other one about eighteen years, so they probably have seen a few good years, and bad years.
Hopefully things will improve though, the company my dh just started with, announced last week that they are having a reduction in pay company wide. Hopefully that won't last long, because he was only making 29 cent a mile to begin with, and that is not very much money, especially after everything has been taken out. (taxes, insurance, school repayment, etc)
If I were you I'd just stay working, put all of your check in the bank just as if you were not working, let that build up, while he tries to make enough for all the bills your family has, if he can make it and you have saved some in the bank at the same time it will be helpful, if he doesn't make enough, the money you have saved in the bank may help you get by until things get better.
Right now we are just barely hanging on, and it is not a good feeling at all, I'm hoping that by next month I can have all the regular monthly bills caught up, right now it is just a little difficult.
I'd be very wary of quitting a job right now if I were you, especially if you have a good paying job.
Also as for food, if he can take a microwave that'll help, my dh wasn't able to the first few months, but he took the microwave this trip out, and I found some microwave dinners at the dollar store fairly cheap, (these were the type dinners that don't have to be put in the frigerator) a cooler or refrigerator is a good idea to, whichever one you can get or have, because if nothing else he can buy bologna and bread, and eat sandwiches until finances improve.
My dh has a small crock pot that I bought really cheap (it was a promotional type thing is why it was cheap) anyway, the first few weeks that is what he cooked in, he would just open a can, and set the can in the crock pot with the lid on it, then while he slept the food cooked, and when he woke up, he had something hot to eat. So far I have mostly bought canned soups, tamales, and chilli, I bought these at the dollar store, I also bought him a bunch of those tuna kits (they cost a dollar)
He may not have exactly what he would like to eat especially the first few weeks out, but if he at least has something it'll help keep him from starving or charging up a credit card.
I hope his first few checks will be a lot better than my dh was, my dh' checks are slowly improving, but it is so slow it is hard to tell. The economy just needs to improve.ginseng Thanks this. -
thank you everyone for your advice. I think with the economy the way it is everyone is suffering. for years now I have been the over all bread winner. However I am in the hospitality industry and this past two years have taken a massive hit. My husband who has drove local for years and done fairly well, has had a huge reduction in hours. Anyway, another local trucking company called him last night saying that they may have work for him within 10days. He would get to drive his "big rig" be home 3-4 times a week and would be paid a percentage per load delivered. If he does not leave for Oklahoma Job and this falls through for whatever reason then he will have no job! but if he follows through with Oklahoma, I have a gut feeling he is not going to make anything near what he thinks he will. So at this point I'm holding on to my job for everything its worth and praying I get some hours in myself while he sorts through all this.
thank you again for all your advice!! God Blessrookietrucker Thanks this. -
Given the things and the shape this country is in. If a newbie setting down trying to do a weekly budget, Can He say 1700 miles a week is a starting point to base a weekly budget?
