seriously that speed that is posted is for cars and in no conditions loaded or empty should you be at those speeds on curves

When I was learning to drive a car, my father taught me to respect truck drivers. Always give them the room they need. He said to make friends with the truckers on the road. He said they were professionals doing a job and to respect that. Of course he drove a line truck for the local electric company and a tow truck at night. He taught me to always flash my lights if a trucker was passing and wanted to pull back into the lane I was in, once his trailer cleared my car. The trucker always gave you 2 flashes back to say thanks. Do People do that any more? I do, but its rare the truck driver responds anymore.... Do truckers even like cars that do that??
I remember as a kid standing on the back seat of the 1973 avocado green Chrysler New Yorker and making the 'airhorn' pump with the arm till the trucks would toot the air horn. Would make our day when a driver would respond. LOL
I notice no one flashes their lights anymore when a cop is speed checking to warn the drivers coming the other way. Over all, people are just so much more self absorbed now. As a truck driver wannabe, while I drive now, if I have the impulse to scream at a fellow 4 wheeler of flip them off, I remind myself that I want to be a proffessional driver and I should act like it. To bad more people dont learn that. -
some truckers still flash, im one of them. Some just ignore you and go on with their thing.
Most truckers do not like cars, I am iffy on likeing cars who flash and I say this since I have had some cars that would flash me when I was trying to get over and then they would fly up on the side of me when I started to get over. I dont trust cars half the time, once in awhile a car will flash and I will stay in my lane watching the mirror and sometimes they will flash again and then I know they are letting me over.
The horn tooting depends, if im in heavy traffic I wont do it for the kids. -
Oh, I'll toot the horn for kids.... normally "shave and a haircut" pattern so it doesn't frighten anyone.
-
I have to say nowadays we see some truckers with a very wrong attitude on the roads too.
I know some of them sometimes cutting trough the middle lane like donkeys i am ashamed of being a trucker when that happens..
Brokers are the worsts. -
I've now been a truck driver for 6 months, i flash my lights for other drivers. I also toot my horn for the kids and adults it always makes me smile when the kids get excited.
As for the curves, it depends on what I'm hauling, if i'm loaded I slow down under the posted limit otherwise If i'm empty I feel safe at the posted speed limit, however I only haul van trailers. -
I toot my horn too around children, rather loudly and long. We're not suppose to unless its an emergency but how can you not.
-
@ ncmickey - I used to flash my lights to warn of cops a lot, but not as frequently now that police officers will start pulling you over and giving you the business. It's viewed as obstruction of justice.
While we're on the topic of cops and speeding here, since I can't flash my lights to warn of cops, I will briefly say that if you are ever on U.S. 52 on the Ohio side of the Ohio river, between Portsmouth and Ironton, the likelihood you will get pulled over is high due to that stretch of road being under the jurisdiction of a small village police department that collected over $100,000 in ticket fines last year for a three mike stretch of roadway. (Look up "hanging rock Ohio speed trap") -
I normally just get on the cb and say I sure see a lot of bears near the road SB,NB, EB or whatever. If you have your cb on then you know its coming, if you dont use a cb well tough luck to you.
