I cant get an answer on what is making the horrible grinding noise. It only does it over 60mph, then it comes and goes constantly will only stop for a few seconds, and goes away when clutch is pressed. Had drives shafts checked and inspection plate removed, they said didnt see anything wrong with throwout bearing, and they greased it....that made no difference. any ideas?? please help

Possibly a bearing going in the trans most likely the one on the main shaft between the main box and auxiliary section

I have all the time a spare air ride leveling valve and rod in my truck, Volvo has weak design for this; i lost it many times on bumpy roads and once the driveline shafts are not straight makes a horible griding noise, : Maybe is not totally gone, just malfunction, check air ride pressure
and inspect the air ride valve located in most trucks under 5th wheel.

peterbilt said the ride height was a 1/2inch too low but that gave me a shake and still had the grinding noise. I am about to pull my hair out. like i said only over 60mph, then it does it for 5-6 sec. then quits for 5-6 sec and then sometimes it stops for alittle while. I really notice it more when coasting down a hill, it seems like whatever it is may be dragging the truck down but IDK.

I agree with the air bag leveling valve. I had a grinding noise all the way from TX to OH. it got so bad that i had to drop the bags to go over any type of bump backing up or going forward. Volvo replaced the leveling valve and the noise went away. Luckily it was still under warranty, but if I kept driving with it, it would have torn the transmission up. This valve should be back around the drive tires on the inside frame.

    LindaPV Thanks this.

try taking it out of gear at 60 & see if the noise is there while coasting.
