Interesting thread. We have drivers, a recruiter, a moderator, and a broker and they all agree with each other. That is truly a rare thing.
OP, the message here is simple and clear. Drive for somebody for a year or more before you commit to trucking as a career. That's the only way you'll find all the worms in the apple.
I'm part owner of a small trucking company and believe when I say that the profit margins are thin, the responsibility is tremendous, and the pressure is unrelenting.
You're a money guy...does a 5 to 9 % return on your investment sound good? It might, if you didn't know that there are a thousand ways for that to drop to a minus return and you won't have control over any of them. Since 9% is about the best we've ever done I use it as a personal example. Other drivers and other companies might vary...but probably not much if they're being honest and keeping their books the way they should.
Drive for somebody. Drive for several somebodies if you want. There's a lot more to this business than meets the eye...even an educated eye.

I made $5k per month in my first year as a company driver. No stress, no truck payment. No BA in business. No risks. Oh ya, I also got health insurance in addition to the $60k my first year. That’s worth a lot too.
I’m just saying try being a company driver. It’s not necessarily a trip into poverty unless you go with one of the well known megas who pay crap.Brickwall Thanks this. -
Dude, I'm going to stop this crap about $10k a month, I have trucks doing expedite work and these trucks gross $8k a month when they are working, most of the time they are averaging less than that. Gross. On top of that, the success rate in expedite is far less than OTR becuase the truck and driver to freight ratios are messed up, trucks and drivers are saturating the expedite market and have been for the past 11 years. It is easy to get into, people jump into it with a van or a cheap straight truck and barely make it. Rates have fallen to the point that it is lucritive for a few who fall into a slot and work it but overall it isn't.
If you have any business education, then get off the idea of making any money in it until you learn the niche market. Get with people who know what they are talking about and learn how to leverage a niche within the niche to make it.
Your friend's freinds seem to be bs'ing about all of it, I would not get involve do with anyone without having them having a real stake in the project - another thing you should have learned in school.haycarter Thanks this. -
You're considering flipping your life upside down based on things your friend has "heard" from his friends.
Keep your cash in your pocket instead, find a job, any job, and keep your eyes open for entry into the field of your degree.Toomanybikes, 4mer trucker and Brickwall Thank this. -
You and your friend should team for awhile as company drivers, then in a few months take another look at the 0/0 business.
If you're in Washington state, Lynden Transport hires new cdl grads in Washington state, Houston, Dallas. A team can make good money with Lynden Transport. Might even have opportunities to move up into corporate or their finance department because Lynden is a huge companey with trucking, ships, trains, airlines and on and on. Check it out; they hire new cdl grads for those long haul team runs.
