Indeed it is... Very dependent on a lot of factors.

On the other hand, $7.25/hr barely buys you some food, and not much else. Try to live on that as a single guy--or, better yet, with a family.

You can't, no matter where you live--unless it's a tent by the river; and even then I doubt seriously you could do much more than feed yourself and maybe some clothes. And forget it if you get sick: you can't afford healthcare then, either.

So, yeah: it's relative. Relatively barbaric.

But apropos... because, sometimes, that's the ONLY "negotiation" a person like a mugger (or a robber baron) can understand...:biggrin_2556:

I just don't like to see this because every day is a gun murder day. Why not a 2x4 alongside the head? Much more traditional:)

Well the op was asking about trucking pay. You are talking about walmart or any other minimum wage jobs. Im just telling my experience. the month the truck broke and I made 1200 and had to pay all my meals while the tranny was repaired, I made no money for like 10 days. Let alone having to team and not getting more than 4 hours of sleep a night. Only an idiot would think minimum wage is enough to live off of. How many guys are saying they only make 350 to 400 a week after taxes while working 65 hours a week for the first 6 months? Too many. First year is ruff. I moved 1300 miles to make better money and have benefits.

Nah, a baseball bat is far more traditional... personally, I'd prefer a far quicker and more permanent solution.

Sorry, but a lot of the trouble with crime is the fact the criminals themselves (excepting politicians--they deserve automatic Farrington and feathering) aren't afraid of the repercussions.

Firstly, how on earth did you come up with the idea that teachers pay no social security? I assume you MUST mean outside of the United States.

Secondly, teachers are NOT off by four every day. In fact, most are at work until 6:00 or later, then many are required to put in extra time in extra duties (ballgames, dances, music events, plays, seminars, in service) to name a few.

Thirdly, Teachers make nowhere near what you claim, $80,000 a year is a total pipe dream. A teacher with 20-25 years experience may be pulling in $55,000 NOT much more, and very likely less. However, here is the real kicker! Teachers, get paid salary, therefore their benefits are tacked on yearly pay. What I mean is that their healthcare, provided under contract is included in their earnings, as well as their pension. THEY CANNOT OPT OUT OF EITHER! So a teacher making $55,000 a year, sees a take home check of about $600 per week after taxes. To top this off, teachers also have to pay out of pocket for continuing education typically Grad credits to keep their state license.

All and all, being a teacher is NOT that good, pay wise at all.

In addition, because of many budget cuts many teachers have to pay out of pocket for basic supplies. The younger the kids they teach, the more out of pocket expense. My ex wife was a teacher. Often worked until 6-8 pm, had to be there by 6:30, made 50k a year with 20 years experience spent about a quarter of her check buying supplies for kids crafts...It was tax deductible, but that doesn't help pay the electric bill until March.

Yeah, my current wife is a teacher, and I look really closely at what she makes... In many ways it is like trucking, the sheer amount of unpaid time is unbelievable. Not to mention, that their healthcare is tacked on to their wages... This means that they are taxed on this as well. So teachers get income taxed on wages they don't receive. After seeing this, I asked her to ask if she could get earnings instead of the health care (she could be placed on mine) then at least make the she was taxed on for health care. District office told her "No Way".
