Yes -my point exactly, thats why i am confused why someone with a computer skill background would even consider trucking --UNLESS --they had a great drive to drive.
I get it that everything in the world has fallen off --but i cant imagine you cant find work --just looked on Craigslist pgh pa --seems to be plenty of technology jobs.
Just FYI: from what i read on this forum - the drivers out there (most) are actually making less than i was in 1985 -86
I am sorry Blacky --you just don't know.
Fuzzymateo has it right -- you will be choked to OTR poverty by the "new" log book requirements --not to mention if DOT fines you the driver for some ridiculous minor violation like tears in the reflective tape at the top of a container. Can the top efficient drivers work around the hours of service --yes but a long learning process --but by then most drivers are gone from being paid poorly.
You also have it right --walmartization --yep.
From what i can tell by these posts on this site, The big trucking companies receive monies from your tax dollars under the guise of "not enough Truck Drivers" so they promise to train Americans to work -- meanwhile flooding America with drivers --which they can use in return for very small pay checks. Since they now flooded trucking with drivers they can also cutback on the real professional drivers pay (lifers) since they can be replaced at the drop of a hat for less pay.
Here is where it gets ugly, So now you have a ton of new drivers working for peanuts, who in turn will quit soon, so now the company can go back to the Government and show that they need to train more drivers --and will need more money to go with it --ya feel me.
Your comment - "Would driving improve if all regulation from the roads was removed" -- Is a bit ridiculous --but go OTR, and then we will see if you change your tune.
Do you think that someone needs 34 hours (Rest) to reset their driving clock, and not just 34 hours in a row --but 34 hours with 2 periods between 1am and 5am involved with that 34 ? Oh yeh and only once a week --cause what, taking 2 -34 hour resets would not rest you enough to be legal again.
Shoot forgot to "Reply with qoute"
I get you and thanks. Sounds like the regulations were written by the lobbyists for the benefit of everyone but drivers.

I was just referring to how people believe nonsense that everything would be great if only government got out of the way. If that was true than we must have worker's paradises in China and India.

Ha, ha. You couldn't get two truckers to agree on anything. Most of them say they are making good money.
Blacky i am confused, maybe you can clarify --are you driving truck for a company now?
I thought you were "Thinking" about going OTR.
Since school I have been looking local without success. I'm thinking about OTR because I need income so am doing research. I couldn't believe it was right that I would have to work 14 hour days for so little.

However, I could be wrong about this whole deal. I'm a good driver and it doesn't cause me to stress out. Maybe less stress is worth it. Maybe the way to go is to drive team so I can get experience while practicing truck maneuver.

Actually you could do okay on 12K. That puts you below the gov't poverty level. That qualifies you for all freebees. Just get free gov't housing (section eight) . Get free medical (medicaid). Get free food (SNAP). Get a free gov't cell phone. That 12K would be your spending money.

I haven't been "Trucking" for like 30 years --but team is a good choice for what you want to know.
Thats how i started --you definitely should get the miles, you will not be alone for those times when you may need some help, Even better companies may hire you for the reason mentioned (not being alone) --do not if you can help it go with some company that pays pitiful pay for a team driver -- i would imagine you should make i guess around $800.00 clear teaming in a good company ? I dunno
others would know better.
If you dont like it you will find out quick --i guess your computer degrees don't expire - but apparently your CDL has a very short shelf life --go figure.

This brings that "beancounter" comment back to the forefront of the discussion...

edit: EXCEPT... the problem isn't "government", it's corporations taking over the government and finding ways to steal more taxpayer money--in this case in the form of abused training grants that, properly used, would actually help the driver shortage; instead, it allows the trucking corporations (mainly, their execs and beancounters) to abuse the system to pad their profits by creating a cheap labor mill.

Stop this abuse, and the pay scales will improve. Don't blame the government (YOUR government!) for abuse by a few people bent on taking as much money they can, no matter how illegal or immoral it may be.
