I've seen plenty "petite" women running solo open deck trucking. You only need brawn when you don't have brains.

There are some Buffalo around but they are captive on private land for the most part. We'd call them Moose grills or car catchers, and Deer guards if they are the lightweight cheap kind.

Well when I started driving not all trucks had jakes or engine retarders as you call them. Thats where knowing how to downshift comes in. Having the jakes come on like you describe well I see that as a plus not a problem they are after all still helping you to get the rig slowed or stopped. How if the problem was you could put the brake pedal to the floor and the brakes wouldnt work then I would call the truck unsafe. Having the problems you describe does not make them unsafe, just a bit odd is all.

This is horrible advice... Dot the truck yourself and if you find problems put it out of service... Over here even if you volunteer you are going to get CSA points... People need to learn how to dot the truck themselves.. It isn't really that hard..

This isn't terrible advise let me tell you I have ran for companies that have crap trucks and trailers and if one complains and says its unsafe and reasons why either it doesn't get fix, or you are told well that is what we have you wanna work today or not. I have told companies when my tires were below 2/32 and almost bald they needed to be replaced did they replace them no. So I made sure all my ducks were in a row, noted defects, and went to scale house asked for voluntary inspection and explained problem. Dot agreed and guess what here come 8 brand new tires and a hefty fine and bill to company.

So no if one wants to keep job and one isn't sure a voluntary inspection takes the hassle out of whether you be fired or not and will get the job done. My one student did this over Hos guess what company got slapped with about 25k in fines all to the safety dept. know what he got from company, a raise, new truck, and home every weekend with the miles to boot.

bad idea is to do nothing and quit, and let someone else get hurt or hurt somebodies family.

oh and by the way my score and students csa score still 0. So not sure what your problem is

I don't know if you would consider my advice as good but don't drive for a company that can't maintain the braking system or sub-systems to help slow or stop the truck.

I don't know what weight you are hauling on average but I don't think you are running a road train, however a heavy truck that has the engine brake kicking in every time you step on the brakes is a disaster waiting to happen.

one truck (the one with the foot brake putting the retarder on) is a pocket road train with a limit of 80,000kg. we took 79,000kg of potatoes to the markets. takes a bit of getting used to applying the brakes then goosing the accelerator so you don't keep heavily decelerating. and a driver and/or company can be fined for using retarders/engine brakes in a residential area for excessive noise.

the other is a b-double that took 30,000kg of potatoes to a factory.
