If I land the job I want, I will be driving mostly at night from what I was told, which I would prefer anyway. And I do plan on running as much as I can but I want to be smart about it and if possible, maximize the hours available.

It was all hypothetical. I had concerns about HOS limiting my earnings and just decided to put numbers in a spreadsheet to see how badly it would restrict my mileage. I was surprised to see that it is possible to drive fewer hours per day but make more money if it eliminates the need for a 34 hour reset. The difference was about $2750 a year at $0.40 CPM and not worth giving up all home time even if it could be done. It was all hypothetical and the reason I underlined could in my original comment.

The smartest way to run is to get a job that doesn't require working 70 hours a week to make a living wage.

From everything I have read, it sounds like 8.5 to 8.75 is the sweet spot anyway. I'm sure nothing will go the way I want it to though.

It sounds as though I'll have to take what I can get at first, but I don't expect to earn anything decent until my 2 year.

There are first year drivers out here making more than drivers that's been driving 30 years.

This is true. I put my time in with a crappy otr company(actually made decent money though). Now I have a union job and I'm home every night.$10/week bcbs, uniforms, paid ppe, guaranteed pension after 5 years,we get paid for everything(fuel,d/h,stop pay/unload/load/hourly/mileage/pre-post trip/detention/safety meeting pay, etc, etc)
