Even over 2 decades ago the cartels were violent (and back then the Arellano Felix cartel was calling most of the shots,along with the Gulf and Sinaloa cartels) but now with most of the former cartel leaders either imprisoned or dead and the Zetas and their ill oak running amok,anything goes. And a lot of innocent people get caught up in the crossfire,figuratively and literally. Nowadays you piss someone off down there they hang your body from a bridge (if you're lucky,that's all they'll do) or chop your head off or cut you up completely and stuff your remains in an oil drum.

 

one would think any cartel or those involved would know by now the methods of success and failure.

Okay, that's odd. Why would a Mexican "family member" tip off US authorities? I'd assume they'd gone to great lengths to get coyoted in. Unless it's one of these slavery rings nobody's talking about.
