I've been running Win XP SP2 for years now without reinstalling it. It's really a matter of knowing what programs to run and what not to.

I'd not recommend unchecking things under msconfig unless you know what you're doing. Same with registry cleaners. It's really easy to screw up your computer.

I've been using a backup system for years - Norton Ghost. I hate most Norton products but Ghost works well for me and has saved me hours many times (I like to mess with stuff and sometimes screw it all up!!!)

I'm running Vista ultimate now on my laptop and XP everywhere else and nothing has messed up in months.

I give some of this credit to using CC Cleaner and also to knowing what not to open/download/install. I also use NOD32 for antivirus and that's it - no anti-spyware bloatware, no extras, just keep it simple and you'll be fine.

Also, make sure you have two gigs of ram if you're running Vista no matter what.

    Good luck :)

After you click on start then click on run and type msconfig in the box that appears.

One other way is to hold the Windows key and hit R and the run command box will pop open, tada! Its magic!!

Many ways to skin a cat :biggrin_25519: The only reason I post this is because in Vista the run command is not listed under the Start menu (and since you didn't post what OS you were using).

Uhm... you sure you want to advise these people to do such things when they don't even know how to do "run" "msconfig"? Just a thought...

In Vista, you just type it right in after you click on the Start key and it comes up for you. You no longer need to use cmd or run for most things. I assume you know this?

Heh ya man I know, but by default the RUN command is no longer listed under the start menu unless you do a tweak to re-add it and people with Vista will get confounded if they try to follow directions and find there is no 'Run' lol. That's why I posted the win+r shortcut. Most people that are not computer literate will not figure out to type msconfig in the search box. I still like my little run box :biggrin_25525:

I fully believe in getting rid of any and all bloat ware from a computer. It diminishes the performance right out of the box.

I have been uninstalling and unchecking startup services since windows me! :biggrin_25525: And if you uncheck something that you need, you can always boot to safe mode and re-enable it.:biggrin_255:

Good post. Especially for those that have bought something off the shelf that is loaded with things that they will never use.
