Possible self driving trucks by 2020?

I think, realistically, it'll be like intermodal. It'll just take up the slack, relieve the shortage of drivers. The tech industry is big on hype. It raises venture capital for startups, jacks up stock prices for established companies. It's largely a pipe dream, wouldn't it be grand. Certainly someday, but no day soon. The capital investment required is just unworkable. Assuming the technology actually worked, which it really doesn't, it would likely take about $10T to do the conversion to all autonomous with just trucks. That will take 50 years to happen. It isn't just the trucks, it's the roads and facilities as well. An autonomous truck with existing factories, warehouses and stores seems like a punchline for a joke not a realistic concept.

I don't see this ever happening in my lifetime and I'm only 36. Its not as easy as a self check out at Wal-Mart. Get your cdl the roads need us. By the time they figure out how to actually do that you would have already ran your first year to learn the industry, leased out a truck, and will become an o/o on your way to starting up your own trucking company heading to a six figure year. Get your cdl man. Wish I would have started at the age of 21.

 

Did you see the news today? Elon Musk carried through on his idea to launce his red Tesla sports car into space. It's in permanent orbit around the sun and has a crash test dummy in the drivers seat.

 

When you think about it, one would think if you could launch a Tesla car into space you could make a workable self driving truck. It's actually easier to launch something into space that do make trucks self driving. There's not much to run into in space and the things that are there to run into move in a predictable path.
