Thanks to everyone for replying to this, I’ve seen people talk about how it’ll never happen, and others talk about how it will happen, but neither have really gone in depth or given it much thought. They’ve kind of just brushed it off as nothing so it’s been reassuring and set my mind at ease to get a perspective from people who actually drive and to see I’ve got nothing to worry about when it comes to getting my cdl.

@Rollr4872 About 30 days before your 21st birthday, submit applications. There's several that hire 21 yr. old students.Tell the recruiters you want to set up a class date to begin as soon as you are 21 yrs. old.
Prime Inc. - you already discussed.

I can almost guarantee that we wont see self driving trucks until AFTER a self driving big rig hits and kills a car driver...until companies know how to defend themselves in court from fatalities...there aren't going to be wide scale deployments....what always happens with new tech is a huge marketing push making the public believe think that w/e new tech is being hyped is ready for commercial adoption when in reality its a decade or two off

Will do. Is there any advice you have for talking with a recruiter for the first time? As far as what questions to ask or what to look out for, just to be better prepared on the right track right from the start. And thank you for all the help and pointing me in the right direction as far as which companies to look into. I really appreciate it.

I haven’t been the most involved or up to date with what new tech is being unveiled, but I saw another news article on another company that’s testing self driving technology and that was my first thought, that they’re really trying to hype up this technology and make it look like it’s ready for mass production. It’s kind of believable and worrying but at the same time after seeing what everyone has said in this thread I’m seeing that there’s a lot they aren’t discussing or taking into consideration. It’s kind of just “look at this new technology we’re messing with and what it can do.” A decades still too close for me lol but I agree with you that once a major accident happens because of it a whole bunch of complications will come up and opinions of it will change.

Don't overthink it. Just get started and when your 12 month obligation if fulfilled, decide if you're content where you are or need to make a change to another company. Learn as much as you can during that first 12 months; trucking isn't difficult at all, so relax and learn to prepare for being assigned your own truck.
Don't ask about drug tests. Roehl does hair follicle drug test though.
Since you'll be with a trainer for awhile after graduation, take your stuff in a flexible duffle bag, not a rigid suitcase. Storage will be limited with two drivers in the truck.
Take a sleeping bag & pillow to use while riding with your trainer. After you complete training and are assigned your own truck, then decide if you want to continue with a sleeping bag or use sheets/blanket.

tech companies are selling a fantasy to.our industry b/c is in desperate need of drivers...check out the farming industry..less immigrants are allowed into our country...so "robotic farming" is getting big according to news media...its bull#### i think for the most part
the reason self driving trucks is being hyped isnt because of the tech but the market need for new drivers and limitations ELDs imposes on us...just like the farming industry n shortage of harvesting crews bc of stronger immigration enforcement...google "robotic farming"...youll see what i mean

So if the self driving truck thing was to actually work out and live up to all the hype do you believe it would try to comp for the driver shortage before trying to replace all drivers or do you think it would go straight for replacing all drivers? I looked up the robotic farming and I had no idea about that, but I do see what you mean.

    Google : Ghost Ports
Nine people running a giant sea port for merchant ships. Robotics replaced 100's of sea port workers.

There goes that reassurance lol I’ll look them up though, I can’t remember where but I think I’ve heard about that before, someone somewhere mentioned how usually new technology like this gets implemented at the ports first and then it either moves on elsewhere or just stays at the ports.
