Zoom in on my straps. Not every 10 feet by perfectly legal. Plenty of straps for the weight but very close to the dunnage.

And to answer your question when the load is suspended near the ends and you put a point load in the middle the edges carry the load and a bridge beam with a cracked edge loses much of its strength. You probably can't apply enough pressure with your winch bar but trailer flex during a rail crossing or any pothole can quadruple the force on that point load and cracks can appear. -
