I’ve never used edge protectors on lumber.

Most guys don't. However, it's cheaper than new straps.

I’ve never had a strap cut or anything either on lumber. My straps will round the corner on plywood and dimensional lumber already has rounded corners. To each their own.
The only lumber I would put edge protection on would be if it’s cabinet grade plywood or something of that nature. And I would only do that to mitigate any potential claims. But I also wouldn’t haul stuff like that unless I had a conestoga. -
