When I first started trucking OTR I hauled a lot of bulk potatoes, chippers, to Frito Lay in California and sometimes Casa Grande AZ out of American Falls. A lot of the Montana boys would bounce down and grab some as well. R&G potatoes, owned and run by Ray and Garn, were good people to deal with.
Ray told the story one day about one of the Montana boys that got loaded and had a 45' x 96" reefer with fixed tandems. He ended up heavy on the drives but just right on gross. After weighing, he came back into the office asking what they normally did with bulk potatoes on the floor to adjust the weight. Ray told him just to go out on the county road where there was no snow, put her in reverse, get moving and then hit the brakes.
The fella said ok by god I'll give it a go. Ray said he was watching him, and the ole boy shifted his brownie 3 times in reverse and had to be doing a solid 20 mph backwards when mashed the brake pedal. Ray said the drivers dang near came off the ground and it's a wonder he didn't blow the trailer doors out!
Now I have no idea if there is any truth to the story, but Ray must have told it well because I still remember it now some 40 years later.cke, exhausted379, IH Truck Guy and 12 others Thank this. -
