This is why there will be more and more automatics for general freight.

That's along the lines of what another driver at this company said while we were discussing autos, mpg and driver turnover in different divisions. I guess they're best at getting poor/uncaring drivers good fuel mileage? o_O Sucks for us bunch, lol.

ya but even with a bad driver an auto doesn't see good fuel mileage. I told the owner once not to spent the extra money on refrigerators, tvs, inverters, etc. and just pay more. You'll get better drivers that take better care of your equipment. In one ear and out the other that went.

I took an automatic 388 with a Paccar MX into Peterbilt on Friday for service and returned with a manual one. Something I noticed, even driving a truck I've never driven before, was that I could shift far smoother than the auto-shift could, and would always have the motor running in the optimum torque/RPM range.

I also noticed that autos are easy to speed in, and if you aren't concentrating on downshifting, you can come up on stopped traffic unnecessarily fast.

I don't know, the maintenance guy here likes them for the fuel mileage gains.

Definitely smoother floating a manual, any day of the week. The first time I drove an automatic was actually before I had my licence (I could already shift at this point). As a brand new driver the biggest thing I noticed was how easily you could take a corner or curve to fast compared to a manual when you know or have a good idea of what gear you should be in before you get there and almost don't need to think about it, not the same in an automatic... I posted about that somewhere here once.
